    Hey all,

There is a thread on Luke costumes in General already. But Im making one specifically for the Luke ANH costume research. So feel free to get fully Obsessive over the details here!

The Padawans guide has quite a few reference images.

    http://www.padawansguide.com/luke_anh.shtml

And Parts of Star Wars has a few things listed as well.

    http://www.partsofsw.com/luketat.htm

Im going through and researching the different parts of the this costume. Ill post information as it comes along.

I would think this would be a fairly easy costume to make. All you'd need to do is make a white Jedi tunic and tan pants. Once you find some good boots and belt, get a blaster and you're ready to go.

The boots are really the trick. I think motorcowboy makes em but they are stark white and brand new looking. The saber is easy as finding a converted Graflex flash gun. The belt could be tricky as some of the pouches were army surplus stuff.

But all in all, not too bad.

MotorCowboy will reportedly distress boots for you if you ask them, or tweak them to whatever specific way you want them done. You can ask for a different color of suede too.

You can also distress them yourself by wearing them in dirty conditions.

Since these are very expensive, though, you can make a decent copy by using a Keds-like shoe as a base. Putees can be made by simple cotton or canvas strips.

Any classic Graflex flash or replica Graflex will work--the only keys to making it specifically an ANH saber is having the one red button/glass eye combination and the clear calculator bubbles on the clamp. Trust me, nobody's going to count the wiper grips. ;)

The funny thing was, the original pants for this costume were actually a pair of bleached Levi's.

If you don't want to fuss over trying to replicate the exact farmstead belt, just take the shortcut and use the stormtrooper belt. It's just as accurate.

Thanks for the input guys! Ive actually got a Parks Graflex that Im converting from a ESB to and ANH.

The shirt pattern is a bit different then the basical Jedi tunic. Ill see if I can't draft up something and show what I mean.

The Tunic was made from 70's era curtains. Ive been searching for some since I got back from my trip, and managed to find some that I think are almost dead on. Ill get some pictures of it in a little bit. Theres enough to make a few tunics I believe, and there was a few more at the thrift store that I found them at if anyone is interested.

Lukes belt was rumored to be a workers type belt that originally had shoulder straps on it.

I am making a storm trooper belt as we speak to go with my costume. Does anyone have any good pictures of the Belt in the visual dictionary? I think they had the comlink and grapling hook pictured as well.

Id love to have a real working grapling hook on that costume. lol The Leia I costume with and I want to try the swing. lol.

MartyBrandt, where did you find out that the tunic was made from curtains? I went to the store where Trisha bought the fabric for various costumes, and they said Lucasfilm has been shopping there since the original film. And, according to the owner, back then she remembers themgetting some white cotton for a costume (I'm assuming Luke's tunic).

As for the pants, according to the film's costume designer, John Mollo, they were brushed denim (just like Han's), while the tunic was a jujitsu shirt, NOT a karate gi. This information is in the Dressing A Galaxy book.

As for the stormtrooper belt, I know who made the prop for the Visual Dictionary book. A lot of those props were remade for the book, since the originals were in such bad shape or were lost. For example, he made the grappling hook for the book, and my brother made his based on the remake!

This site has a great looking ANH costume. It's rather expensive, but the photos are helpful.

My wife is working on a Luke Bespin costume for me. I bought the belt from these guys and the boots from MotorCowboy. Jim at MotorCowboy suggested I go with a brown oilskin leather for my boots as I want a very distressed look. They seem to be very open to working with their customers.

What is the width of their Bespin belt? I know their ANH belt is too narrow to be screen-accurate. I'll post pics soon of a Bespin jacket I have soon. :)

The Bespin belt should be at least 2" wide with a 2" buckle (actual buckle size is slightly wider than that).

Then again, I think this info belongs in the other Luke thread. :p

I'd have to ever so slightly disagree you about the width of the Bespin belt--but agree that this discussion should continue in the Luke thread. In that post I've put 2 photos of Luke in his Bespin costume. One clean and one weathered. In the weathered photo, the length of his lightsaber's activation matrix is exactly half an inch on the original 8x10 I own. The same activation box-thing on my original Graflex flash gun is 2 inches. By using half an inch as 2 inches in the real world, Luke's Bespin belt is nearly 2 inches wide, perhaps an inch and seven-eigths. The buckle looks to be a good quarter inch wider. It's this same half inch equals 2 inches that my wife is using to calculate all the dimesions of the jacket, including, collar height, waist-band, cuffs, pockets and top-stiching.

    Hey all,

Glad to see Im not the only one with interest in this costume.

Ill have to look into it, But I could have sworn it was made from curtains. It was supposed to give it a poor farmboy look.

Im guessing the cotton was for Leia. I could be wrong though.

Im drafting out a pattern to make my tunic with. Ill post progress pics as I go.

So just what are the differences between Luke's shirt and a basic Jedi tunic?

ANH Leia was all polyester, dude. :p

For that matter, I'd be very afraid to see Luke in white poly. [face_plain]

I would beg to differ lol.

And yes, I did see the other post about the differences. The Jedi tunic has seperate sleeves, the Luke sleeves are attached.

Jedi tunic has shoulder tucks, Luke doesnt.

The luke is refered too as a T tunic.

Ill do some drawings later when I draft my pattern. :)

I hope that shows you what the differences are. Let me know if you have any questions.
