I have not seen much information regarding Luke's chosen fighting style, I suppose it is a combination of both Yoda and Obi Wan's, but in that case is it some new hybrid form deserving its own classification. And in this case is it a new more powerful form, one that potentially could have been wielded against Palpatine to great effect, if he had more time to hone his skills.

I don't think forms or styles apply to the OT lightsaber battles. This is something invented in the EU and further explored in the PT. Personally, I don't see the difference in the styles anyway.

can't we all just accept that luke fights with a lightsaber, i mean-it doesn't affect the storyline whatsoever

    Luke's style is definately "I'm-an-actor-who-was-told-to-slash-at-this-guy-until-I-get-over-to-this-prop-and-then-loose"

I think Strider's on to something. Luke's form seems to be a blend of Yoda's Ataro and Obi-wan's Soresue, as we see him blocking blaster bolts, but he also backflips and somersaults over Vader a couple of times in ESB in addition to jumping off the plank, catching it with the tips of his fingers and somersaulting back on to the skiff in ROTJ in addition to jumping over Boba Fett.

Luke's also seems to be similar to Anakin's lightsaber style, which i wonder if Ben or Yoda taught Luke to use against Vader? That was why he fought so well against Vader on Bespin, when his father would have taken any other padawan in minutes ...

I thought Luke followed Form V

Form V is a powerful style developed by Form III practitioners that preferred a more offensive angle. The defensive nature of Form III often leads to dangerously prolonged combat. This style came about from combining Forms II and III. Luke Skywalker, Jedi Master Plo Koon, and Anakin Skywalker, both as himself and as Darth Vader, are all practitioners of Form V.

    From wikipedia

I think it came from Insider

Luke didn't know any lightsaber combat styles. He simply made his own style based off of experience.

I sort of impart from the films that Luke doesn't follow any form, he
allows the force to flow through him and guide him.
He doesn't block blaster bolts because he's beened trained to,
he does so because he is a powerful conduit of the force.
The same with his duels against Vader, he does not follow
a standard form, he is fluid, formless.

The only kata we ever see Luke do is the 45 seconds of traning
against a remote aboard the Falcon en route to Alderaan.

Here, his success is based on stretching out with his feelings,
trusting to his connection with the force rather than senses.
This is again a success in Yoda and Ben realizing the dogmatic
and ritualistic failures of the Jedi training regime and they
allow Luke to do what the Jedi should have been doing, attune
with the force, rather than a teaching.

I agree that the saber techique is impartial to any explained form, and the OT saber forms have not been as focused as they are in the PT as another post said.

Luke's style is effective. Plus its cool!

He has his Fathers'...oompf!...but he doesn't use it at much.
    He has Yodas'...flexibility
And he has Obi-wan's fast yet wizer than Anakins moves.

    Really chezzy i know!:D

    1. Yoda taught him for like, 3 months, so he probably learned something about dueling there.

    2. Based on how he fought at the last part of the duel with Vader in RotJ, he didn't learn much. He hit the wall more than vader.
