Luke's Scares after Wampa attack

I have read that the wampa attack was put in the story to explain why Luke has scars on his face, cause in real life Mark had a bad wreck. Is this true? Cause it dont even know Luke has any scars after he is off Hoth. I dont think I would even have noticed he did if not told.

 

Didn't he get those scars during filming of ROTJ

 

What I heard, was that he was in a pretty bad accident in 1976/1977 a few days before they finished pick-up shots for ANH. (And I also heard these shots were very minor, like the landspeeder shots).

His website says they used the wampa as a way to explain the scars. So there is the possibility of some discrepancy with the dates; OR if he did have any scars they wouldn't have been in ANH, since principal photography was essentially already finished. That means that it's possible 2 years later that they used the wampa as an excuse for any scarring/changes to his appearance.

There's too much conflicting information for me to have a confident answer.

 

The car wreck scars = wampa scars story is as true as anything. But you have to admit, Mark Hamill is a rather different looking man after that accident, if you compare Luke's appearance from A New Hope to Return of the Jedi. Even today, his face sorta... droops in a certain way that it wouldn't otherwise... it's hard to describe. I wouldn't be surprised if he wears a beard over it all in Episode VII.

 

He actually had scars in ESB, then plastic surgery for ROTJ, if I remember correctly. And if anyone is wondering the exact nature of the accident, he flipped his car multiple times.

 

I second that story about the car crash, and having the Wampa attack explain his visible injuries in real life and on-screen.

The title should be changed from Scares to Scars

 

I remember the wreck being well before Empire Strikes Back, but that is my memory only. I doubt it had any influence on said wampa attack.

I had also gotten the idea from various sources over the years that there was a connection between the fact that ESB showed him getting injured in the face at the beginning of the film and the fact that his facial appearance had changed from his real-life accident (and the timeline Admiral Volshe describes is what I had always heard/read as well). I was under the impression (can't identify the particular source(s) at this point) that the issue was not just "scars" but also the very shape of his underlying bone structure, as I think I read somewhere that in addition to breaking his nose, the real-life accident shattered his cheek bone on one side.

 

I probably would have wet my trousers personally....

 

That's how I've heard that too, although very little information is known about the accident. He was a very fine looking young man in ANH, shame the injuries changed his face. The whole wampa business was probably meant to maintain the continuity in the films, trying to tell us it's the same actor, just looking a bit different.
