Does anyone know how to do some nice engine exhaust in Lightwave 7? I want something similar to the exhaust for the Naboo ships. I have the basic exhaust done using Volumetric lights, but I have no idea how to animate it to make it seem like it is comeing out of the engine. Any ideas? Thanks.

You need a moving fractal pattern in your volumetric settings. In the old Steamer interface, you'd assign a parent object to the fractal pattern. In LW 7, I think there is an option for pattern velocity or something like that.

in lw7 the volumetric lights can be assigned a texture value and then that value can be given a speed.. which will make a moving patern in your volumetric lights..

but since ur looking for exhaust (im assuming the heatwave kinda thing right?) then you can try using hypervoxels (i know its expencive in render times.. but it can do exactly what u want..)

Yeah, I'd go with particle storm and hypervoxels, but man, that's gonna add to your render time. Yikes. I'm not sure how the exhaust looks though.

Edit: then again, as other have said, applying a texture to your light would work just as well, and significantly cut down on render times.

well rendering hypervoxels isnt as bad in the newer versions of lightwave (its a bit faster ..) but the heatwave effect can be made with hypervoxels.. (i think a good place to look is flay.com .. they may have something on it)

It's still pretty bad in 7.

thanks for the ideas! How would I go about adding speed to my texture? And it's not so much the heat effect, but like a blue flame, like an afterburner, comeing from the engine.

Again, if I was doing a dynamic blue flame, I'd do it in hypervoxels.

Thanks Darth, but the speed thing worked and it looks great! Thanks again everyone. Now, anyone have any tips on some good looking lasers? Preferably something that I can have shoot really fast like Slave 1 in AOTC?

r u talkin about lasers rendered in 3D? or rotoing lasers?

My gallery has a laser in the "other stuff" section

wow, that is some fantastic work! I am looking to do lasers in Lightwave as 3D, but I don't know if I should go with objects or try some kind of light parented to a null or what. I was just wondering what other people have had successes with. There are going to be a lot of laser shots in the animation, so something with a nice render time is key.

the laser in my gallery takes only a second or two to render ... its an object with vecter blurr applied to it

for your purposes it would be easiest to use a particle emmitter and then replace the points with a laser object .... and guess what :) there are tutorials for that on www.flay.com :p

thanks! I'll head over there and take a look. :)

ah i discovered that it was not a tutorial.. but it is a downloadable scene file..

    here is the link

you should be able to figure out how to replace the "missle" with a laser.. and im sure u wanted the lasers to have explosions on them like in ep2 with slave1
