I've seen fan-made trailers, music videos, etc. that use actual footage from the STAR WARS films, but I'm always curious how they do it when the tapes have MacroVision? (I found this out when a friend tried to make me copies of the 1995 THX widescreen videos.) Is there a capturing software that can bypass MacroVision, or what?

Not all the Star Wars VHS tapes have Macrovision... anything pre-1990 or so would be okay... the laserdiscs NEVER (not just on SW, but *period* - another reason I still love the format!) had Macrovision ... and for the Episodes I & II footage, there are a few models of DVD players out there that eliminate the Macrovision signal as well...

You can also find a "black box" which will strip the Macrovision from the signal, but they don't always work as advertised... a good professional TBC will also do the same...

Actually, I've used various means to defeat Macrovision over the years because the bloody system degrades the video... it's been known to affect video run through routers independent of a VCR connection...

That's the main reason I modified my DVD/LD player to remove Macrovision, as the only way I have to hook the thing up right now is *through* the VCR, as my TV doesn't have the extra inputs needed... so I'm defeating Macrovision for a completely *legal* use...

Did you happen to notice that the response you're referring to was written by the newest mod?

And besides... Copy protection like that should be defeated. I think Fenn has clearly illustrated that the protection is affecting legal usage of the video.

The various media industries of the world put way too much effort into trying to defeat pirates. All the people that would like to use the technology for legal purposes are paying the price.
