Mama, Papa



Its noisy here. Warm, soft, and noisy.

Mostly, I hear the grumbles and whooshes of Mama all around me, but there are voices, too, on the outside. They are happy or sad. I know, because the way Mama feels when they?re around becomes the way I feel, too.

Right now I feel very happy.

The light is dim but there is a hand against my wall. I can see it. I reach out to touch the spot and the hand pulls away. Then it comes back. I curl my fist and press against it. I want to touch this hand. A deep voice is speaking softly to Mama. I hear this voice a lot.

Mama is wrapping love around me. It feels like a tickle all over. Papa? She says the deep voice is my Papa. I practice a smile, and push my fist harder against the wall.

Now the deep voice is happy, like Mama and me. Papa. It is much harder to feel Papa than Mama, but he?s there. His voice makes us feel safe.





Mama is asleep, but I?m not. Its dark everywhere. Something is pushing down a little on my wall. I feel along the weight - there?s a hand. Its Papa. He has his arm around us.

If I?m quiet, Mama will feel happy when there is light again.





There are so many noises this morning. I feel squashed. Ow! Mama is worried. I?m scared.

Ow! Mama?s body is pushing me down. Why? Ow! Why is this happening? Mama is being calm on purpose. She wants me to feel calm. You?re coming out to meet us. That?s Mama. Ow! I don?t want to!

Well, I want to, but I have been so comfortable here. Ow!

Mama, I will remember.





I?m outside. Its cold. There is so much light! I?m crying to let them know I don't like it.

Its noisy here, too.

Someone has wrapped me in warm softness and passed me over to a pair of strong arms. I hear Papa?s voice and feel soft rumbling to match. I risk opening my brand-new eyes and see ? Papa?s eyes? They are looking back at me. They are wet. I reach out to touch the face above mine. Papa? Hello, Papa.

I don't need to cry anymore. Don't you cry, Papa!

I?m moving lower? lower ? until another arm holds me tight. Papa?s arms pull away. It is warm here, too.

Mama. Her voice is soft. I turn my head to watch her eyes. They look at me, then at Papa, then back again. Mama and Papa are both looking at me.

I gurgle and make some bubbles. I want to tell them that I have known what they look like for a long time.





?Pa-pa!? I smile my very sweetest smile at Papa.

His green eyes sparkle as I do my best to walk to him on my own. I hold onto the chair as long as I can. Papa is squatting down, his arms reaching out to me. I have to try.

Papa says I can do it.

I let go of the chair and wave my arms about. That helps me to walk better. Five steps and I am in Papa?s arms.

?You did it! All on your own! Jay, did you see that?? Papa is very happy. He twirls me in the air. I squeal so that everyone will know how happy we are. We're happy, right Papa? Mama must have been watching. She runs over to hug both of us. We are all being noisy, but I am warm and safe again.

?Yes, Jag. I saw!? Mama sends tickles of love, like she always does. I try to tickle back and I see her smile get bigger.

Better than a cup of warm, hot chocolate.

I loved the baby's point of view - from inside Jaina's womb. You always come up with such original ideas. The voice of the baby was adorable and reminded me of children's books. The 'tiny' voice of the author to reflect a younger character.

Sweetness!

 

I find it difficult to write a review for this without saying "sweet" or "awwww," because that's what comes to mind. Very nice, heart-warming little story, oldj Was an interesting approach writing it from the babies POV from inside the womb and you did it very well You also managed to tell a very emotional story, focusing on the feelings more than anything, and the scene where the child was born was particularly well-done.
