Mamas and Papas' John Phillips affair with his daughter

You know I always said I was ok with anything as long as people were consenting adults but this really did cross the line for me. It just seems extraordinary that it could all have been kept quiet for so long. And his bandmate Denny Doherty KNEW? Dear Lord!

 

Meh, the thing of it is that John Philips is dead and can't deny it, and let's be honest, poor Mackenzie is just bat**** insane, so who knows if it's true or not?

When I first heard I did wonder was this a delusion on her part but reading up on it both her half sisters and his bandmates' daughter also confirm it and say they've known for years

 

The only upside is that they were both, more or less, consenting adults. It pushes the taboo buttons, that's for sure, but I hate to be the one to judge something that two grown ups want to do when it's really, truly a victimless crime.

 

It was consensual, they were both adults so it was in no way abuse but still, it makes me cringe. Reputedly we're genetically programmed against inbreeding so that's why we're fundamentally revolted by the idea (and why lesbian incest doesn't seem to be taken so seriously?)

 

Not sure I buy that just because they were adults that it was not abuse. Fathers still have tremendous power and authority over their kids, even as adults.

 

Yes, I suppose it wasn't abuse in the conventional sense, but there was an element of that at work: especially since it began when she was 19. That's technically an adult I guess, but also still technically a teenager as well.

Plus she was already having relations with Mick Jagger... why is it the more twisted the story from the late-60s to 1980, the greater the liklihood the Rolling Stones are somehow involved?

 

*If* it's true. She has a book out, and she needs money. This book sells nothing unless there's an accusation of this nature to get publicity.

 

She's got to be pretty desperate to make up a claim like that for money. Sure, it might be quite a sum after all this publicity... but if you're at that point (and you are actually sober as she supposedly is now) wouldn't make make the most sense to bite the bullet and just get a 9-5 job like everyone else? I mean really, it won't kill ya.

 

She's been an addict for the past 30 years. Her only talent is as a bad actress.

Her half sister confirmed that MacKenzie told her about it some time ago. Not entirely reliable, but certainly gives the story a bit more credibility.

Still, do we really need to know this for any other reason than for Phillips to make money off her book? I don't think so. I feel bad for her, awful way to grow up, but there's alot worse things going on in the world, too.

 

Frankly, that doesn't mean a lot, especially as she has been drugging for years. This type of fantasy is not uncommon.

Yes but his daughter confirmed in by -- apparently -- writing in to the Winfrey show unsolicited saying that she had this conversation with her father where he told her of this relationship (and according to that daughter, Doherty was himself horrified by the entire thing). So either the Winfrey staff is lying about that, this was set up beforehand by MacKenzie for others to back her up, or Doherty was told this some time ago by MacKenzie herself and believed it as did her sisters.

Otherwise I presume Doherty must have kept in contact with Phillips himself or someone else that knew him to a certain extent to know this, since the entire thing began almost ten years after thier last attempt at a reunion (and about 5 years after Mama Cass died).
