I had both on my Pancakes last night, and this was the first time I've had Maple Syrup (being in the UK) and I've got to say, I thought it was horrible. Give me Golden Syrup anyday. :D

What do you prefer on your Pancakes?

Maybe you don't like either and prefer something else, sugar, lemon or jam?

Is golden syrup anything like golden showers?

I prefer my pancakes plain or with fresh fruit.

Was it *real* maple syrup, or Aunt Jemimah's / Mrs. Butterworth / etc.?

Very few people have enjoyed the taste of real maple syrup because it's fairly expensive.

I refuse to use anything but pure 100% maple syrup. Unless my only option is the fake crap, I always use it.

It's not really that expensive. My parents usually have a bottle of it kicking around.

Well it's much more expensive than the fake stuff, at any rate. But it does take 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup.

Golden Syrup is the UK (maybe European?) version of Maple Syrup. Its treacle.

I worked in a Denny's for a while, and only recently can even stand the smell of pancakes.

On the rare occassion I do eat them, I put peanut butter on them.

Treacle is ok, but as a Canadian I'd have to go with REAL maple syrup. Actually, even the fake stuff and Corn syrup are preferable to treacle.

As a side note any Canadian that does not defend maple syrup should be subjected to the national punishment: a stern, deriding - yet polite- look of disapproval.

    Treacle=mollases, I think.

And it should be said, the pancakes G-Fett ate are probably not the Denny's variety (if he has the same as I had on pancake day growing up). I think they're German pancakes.

But I could be absolutely incorrect in this whole post.

The pancakes made here in the UK on Pancake Day resemble crepes more than they do US buttermilk pancakes. If I was having a US-style pancake it would have to be butter and maple syrup for me. I've never actually had UK-style pancakes or Golden Syrup.

I've tried maple syrup, it was bland, flavourless goop and didn't do anything to make the pancake taste better. I think golden syrup would be too sickly sweet.

I prefer lime juice and sugar on mine. :)

Actually they were pancakes I made myself in my very UK based kitchen from my Mothers recipe. [face_laugh]

I actually googled all the vocabulary in this thread, and yes, there is a descrepency between the US defintion of the words, and the UK version.

If I were eating the pancakes I believe G is describing, the golden syrup would indeed be delightful. Seems golden syrup has a far more subtle flavor than the super sweet maple that goes on US flapjacks. At least, according to what I read.

    Ah, I see.

So, when I had Maple on one of my Pancakes last night, I was actually eating the wrong topping for that pancake. Interesting. [face_thinking]

I've never tried maple syrup so golden syrup wins by proxy.

Golden syrup is like a syrupy (not thick and gloopy), sweet, golden coloured () treacle. And I prefer lemon and sugar on my pancakes (which for the benefit of non-Brits are like crepes).

    Everybody got that? [face_plain]
