The Martial Arts moves of Darth Maul really kicked a$$.

His flips, roundhouse kicks, whirling-sideways-spinning-jumps, and just the shear speed of the Obi-Wan/Maul duel really rocked my socks.

It's a shame there wasn't any martial-arts influence in EP2, and I doubt there will be any in EP3. Just fast Ani/Obi (which is sort of cool, but still no martial arts) and Yoda flying around some more.

    And Dooku's style gets old.

What I do think was cool in the trailer is the way Palpatine attacks... a lightning quick dash and low attack as only a cheating devil would.

Still, the Martial Arts of Maul are sorely missed for the Dark side.

    whirling-sideways-spinning-jumps

Them's called "butterfly kicks" (in the US) or "whirlwind kicks" (everywhere else).

Just thought you might like to know :)

Yeah, I agree with you. I really miss the martial arts ski11z of Darth Maul. I'm afraid the duels of the other movies are just going to look like whacking contests in comparision, especially for future generations who watch TPM first.

I'm trying to hold out hope that Palpatine might show some Maul-esque ski11z in RotS since I suppose he did train Maul and Maul had to learn all that stuff somewhere. However, I honestly won't be too surprised if the choreography of the RotS duels is once again less than artful.

Maul is probably the best sith when it comes to combat. i think this because Dooku moves like an old fart and looks like he is having a heart-attack when he strikes.

Argeed it was definitly lacking in AOTC but there was a martial art feel to the Vader/Kenobi duel, nice to see.

The best Sith in combat is, without a doubt, pre-suit Vader. Just look at the power, the speed, the ferocity, the agility, the resourcefulness etc with which Anakin attacks his opponents. Maul would be no match for him.
This became clear to me the first time I watched the TPM duels after seeing ROTS a couple of times. What seemed very, very fast in 1999 is now merely fast.

I remember this type of question being asked in the "Ask the Counsel" on starwars.com. There were many types of Martial Arts used in the EP:1, I can only remember some kendo stuff. Prolly simmilar to a Bo-Staff combat in Tae-Kwon Do....(excuse me for butchering martial arts names)

I think you're right because i take Tae-Kwon-Do, and in ROTS Grievous's Magna guards use an electric staff, and they use Bo and Jo moves.

Darth Maul's martial arts is amazing. Though it's not that suprising as Ray Park holds a second degree black belt in Wushu, which is the kind of fighting he uses as Darth Maul.

Though there is still an element of martial arts in all the other films. Jedi techings reflect martial arts philosophies and Lightsaber fighting is partially inspired by Kendo.

As for Dooku, his style of fighting is more like fencing. He's meant to be a kind of elegent gentlemanly swordfighter as apposed to a young full-on brute force fighter.

Ray Park is also a black belt in Kenpo I think. The Ninjitsu art of sword fighting.

Ray also did all of his own stunts.

Can't say that for Dooku.....oh wait, Dooku is so old and frail that they needed a double just to perform his lightsaber twirls. Lucas really messed up by replacing Ray Park with Christopher Lee.

Meeting Ray Park at C3 was a dream come true.He was very nice to talk to.And in talking to him he pointed out to checkout some of his stunt work in Mortal Kombat and Sleepy Hollow. And sure enough I did.He is an awesome performer and actor.Too bad his caracter was chopped in half.

Ray Park is also a black belt in Kenpo I think. The Ninjitsu art of sword fighting.

Just for your info. Kenpo is an unarmed combat form. Kendo is a sword fighting method which is more akin to what you see in the lightsaber duel between Ben and Vader in ANH; it is a very efficient style without all the acrobatics.

Kenpo can also refer to swordsmanship, it just translates differently. It reads "law/rule of the sword" instead of "way/path of the sword". It's an old way of refering to kenjutsu, not used much now because of confusion with with unarmed Kenpo, which means "fist method". The swordsmanship of ninjutsu is usually called bikenjutsu, meaning "secret/hidden sword techniques". Ray Park is a Wushu man, which explains his acrobating skill and physique.

It looks like Ray Park mastered both Kenpo and Kendo, he kicks ass.

I don't know if Ray Park ever studied Kendo before TPM, but the choreographer had a familiarity with it, as well as lots of other forms of swordsmanship. As for Kenpo? Well, since the Japanese refer to most forms of Chinese Arts (like Wushu) as "kenpo", you could say that he HAS mastered it!

Maul was one serious dude. The baddest of any of the SW bad guys. He let his actions speak instead of his words. I thought Grievous was a slight disapointment. Maul had a double bladed saber which he wielded to perfection but Grievous used four sabers at once which was under-used in the film - BIG TIME!

"It will be done my lord!"
