How many different types of Martial Arts are their in the galaxy? And which is the most effective type?

I know of Echani, Tera Kasi, and the Noghri styles any more?

Each form of Lightsaber combat can be considered a Martial Art even though they aren't hand to hand.

Tae-Jitsu: this was a form of martial art practiced by a small number of beings during the last decades of the Old Republic. It was considered to be generally ineffective, and more bluster than martial art.
K?thri Arts: this style of martial arts emphasized unarmed combat. Those beings who understood and practiced the K'thri Arts marked themselves with specialized facial tattoos.
Jeswandi: this was a Bothan martial art, and involved skills used in hand-to-hand combat.
Hapan Martial Arts: this was a form of hand-to-hand combat that was developed by the Hapans. Very few outside the Hapes Cluster knew of this form of martial arts, and fewer still were able to master it.
Dulon: this was a form of martial arts training practiced by the Jedi Knights during the last decades of the Old
    Republic.
Ta-Gun: this obscure but deadly martial art was developed and practiced by the Xamster race on Xagobah.
Wrruushi: this was the name of a Wookiee martial art. Those Wookiees who became skilled in Wrruushi combat were known as devastating hand-to-hand fighters, and were considered deadly at close ranges.
Petranaki: this was the ritualistic form of arena-based martial arts that was developed by the Geonosian race. It centered on the use of specialized weaponry - known as the petranaki array - which changed very little ove rthe course of Geonosian history.
K?tara: this was a style of hand-to-hand martial arts studied by the Alliance's Special Forces division.

    Hope these help.

    Wow, Solidus!
Where did you get this list from?

Are there any sources which show examples of these arts? Images or something?

    Thanks.

Echani was specifically developed for the Royal Guard, and the Nohgri martial art is called Stava.

EDIT: "Are there any sources which show examples of these arts? Images or something?"

Yes. The Star Wars RPG has a sourcebook called the Heroes' Guide that has pictures of Echani, Stava, & Wruushi.

    >>"Echani was specifically developed for the Royal Guard"<<

Not the case: it was in use nearly 4,000 years before Royal Guard existed, during the KotOR era. The Royal Guard simply adopted the form.

The Echani style of HtH combat can also be seen in Knights of the Old Republic II. It's sort of a cross between Kung-Fu and Kickboxing.

Didn't the Mistryls have their own style of martial arts, as well? At least, I think the Hero's Guide mentioned that...

I believe the Mystryls had their own fighting style. Didn't one of their number kick the crap out of a Royal guard in like a two seconds, after said guard was built up during the duration of the book... unrealistic.

There is no "most effective" martial art, really, nor are there among the Forms despite claims to the contrary(Vaapad). But there are arts that seem to have a higher indication of ability than others, some being Teras Kasi, Form II and VII, and Echani.

Vaapad was a lightsaber form first developed by Mace Windu, using lightsaber form VII as a base, and skirting closely to the dark side. Sora Bulq learned it from Mace, and taught some of it to Quinlan Vos.

Vaapad: this lightsaber combat was developed by Mace Windu, with the assistance of Sora Bulq, during the years leading up to the Clone Wars. It was an aggressive collection of maneuvers, and was considered to be part of the Form VII category. As such, the Vaapad training was considered extremely close to the Dark Side of the Force, and was forbidden to all but the most skilled of Jedi Masters. To Master Windu and his apprentice, Depa Billaba, Vaapad was more than a combat style; it was a state of mind in which the fighter opened themselves so fully to the Force to fight their opponent that they drew power from both the light and dark sides of the Force. The style was named for vaapad creature found on Sarapin. It was all but abandoned after Sora Bulq was consumed by the art in what became known as the blood fever, and himself abandoned the Jedi Order.

Said guard was dying at the time. Poison.

From what I remember, masters of Teras Kasi are able to interact with the force in a way opposite to that of the Jedi, where they use the force from within (like the chi) whereas the Jedi use the force all around them, and that very skilled Teras Kasi masters are able to go toe to toe with a normal Jedi Knight.

I don't exactly recall where I read it, but I think it was in an old game called "Masters of Teras Kasi". I don't know if that explanation was made just for the game or if it's actually supposed to be true, though.

Teras Kasi is a martial arts form. The skilled masters of Teras Kasi can go toe to toe with Jedi because they have one of the things that allow normal people to be on a similar footing with Jedi.
