Actor Harry Morgan, best known for playing Colonel Sherman Potter in US TV show Mash, has died aged 96. The star died at his Los Angeles home after suffering from pneumonia, his family confirmed. BBC News I was sorry to see this - I still watch MASH now and then on one of the satellite channels. And I liked him in Dragnet (film and TV series) as well. R.I.P. Colonel Potter..
You realize how popular MASH was here when all the news media has it up, not at top but still, on the front page.
I heard it on BBC London (radio) news when I got up. There's a comedy channel on Sky that runs two episodes an evening and I usually watch if they are ones I like (and nothing else is on). I like the episodes with Sherman Potter better than the ones with Henry Blake in command.
The local news here, when reporting his death, made extra special notice to mention he had ties to the area (Born in Muskegon, MI).
In a show like M*A*S*H, it's very hard to fill a role when a beloved character leaves. Morgan's Sherman Potter was a perfect replacement for Henry Blake and in my opinion, the show only got better with his addition. I was surprised to be honest that he was still alive as I knew he was pretty old. So I was rather impressed that he passed away at 96.
I just relized I have not watched an episode of MASH in 20 years. It used to be a daily thing to do after school.
RIP Sherm. But let us not forget Harry Morgan's inaugural role in M*A*S*H was NOT as Col. Sherman T Potter- but as the awesomely eccentric General Bartford Hamilton Steele (that's with 3 e's- not in a row!) in season 3.
