I use brushed medium chocolate brown denim [weave looks just like the closeups of Obi-wan's robe] for my robes [10 yards] but that is still too heavy for summer use. Does anybody have a idea for a fabric that's lighter, not as hot, and looks pretty good?

I used a raw silk for mine (black) and got it for about $3/yd. You can get raw silk on line from Dharma Trading or Silk Connection but it will need to be dyed. Using Acid dye (also available from Dharma) is very easy and comes in lots of colors. Raw silk (sometimes refer to as silk noil) is a woven silk, not too thick and not too thin that flows wonderfully.

I assume it is light weight as well?

I'm looking for something in a little more reddish brown. In fact the same color as Obi-wan's robe. Does that material come in a lot of different colors?

I used raw silk noil for my summer weight robe as well, and it's very nice fabric, very lightweight!

More pics half way down this page.

I got mine from a local store, but I know Thai Silks has a wide range of colours.

    Hi Zhi-don...Michelle aka Thareen here.

My outer robe is made of a twill-weave shirt weight 100% cotton fabric. I was actually looking for brown denim, and that's what the tabard is made out of. But I wasn't able to get enough of it, so I bought a bolt and change of this fabric I saw on JoAnn.Com.

I like it fine. It looks good and hangs well. And it has that weave that says "Obi-Wan!" to the initiated.

Whoa! click on that pic quick so you see that I'm not THAT fat...

This is the stuff...unfortunately there's no more of the brown. However, they do have a white and this being 100% cotton it should dye gracefully.

    Hope this helps...

I have seen it in a ton of colors but I am sure that if you want just "the right color" then you could of course dye it. That would be very easy to do.

I think Thai silks is the best bet. Dying 10 yards requires special technique and a very large container (bath tub).

i used 100 % cotton twill in a almost jean heaviness. its stiff till you wash it good. i used white, and got a good brown dark dye from ritz.

you use it in the washing machine. simple fast and easy to do. just pull it out when you have the shade you want. then follow the directions to set the color in. which i think was just wash it in cold to set it.

then we just popped it in the dryer.

of course we made the robe and then dyed it. made it a lil big since we knew it would shrink some.

My first ever jedi cloak was made out of a black flannel-like fabric. 100% cotton, so it breathes well, and isn't as heavy as the usual wool.

    Thank you all;

My current robe uses brushed denim material. It breathes well and isn't too hot, but is just too heavy. This can be as bad as the other. Raw silk may be the way to go, but somewhat expensive. Thai silks doesn't seem to have the reddish brown [Obi-wan's robe] that I am looking for.
