    Matsumoto Leiji 999 for PlayStation

How are you guys doing? I need a little help here to find out more about this game. It's titled "Matsumoto Leiji 999 - the Story of Galaxy Express 999". It's made for PlayStation One and was released on June 30, 2001. Has anyone here ever played this game? Could you be kind enough to write a short review here? I will be very appreciated if you can provide any information about this game.

It is most likely that you are a Yamato Fan and/or a Matsumoto Fan before you will be interested about this game.

    Yours truly,
    Luke Hu

I didn't know there was a game. I looked around online for something but didn't find much in English. I am a big fan of the series and I have a lot of the old episodes taped from TV. The tapes aren't very good, though, as I lived in Connecticut at the time and the TV staion was in New Jersey. This was before cable (early 1980s), so I had a rabbit-ears antenna setup that would have fit in fine on the Death Star to drag the station in. Even then the picture was pretty snowy.
The TV station gave away a poster showing Maetel and the train taking off with the show's name in Japanese, and it is still hanging on my wall. Over here in the UK, the story was released in graphic novel form by Viz Comics as well, and I have all 5 volumes. I have a PS2 so I am not sure it would play this if I managed to find it, but I might have to have a look around.

    Dear Laj Fett,

How are you doing? I am glad you replied to my calling so fast.

You can play this game on either PlayStation One or PlayStation 2. But in order to play any Japanese imported games on a US console you need to install a mod-chip to your PlayStation. I got my mod-chip for $5.00 online and had one of my smart friends installed it for me (that was back in 1999, and I only have PlayStation One). It only took him 15 minutes to do it. It's easy if you know how to do it, the instructions were posted on the website where I purchased my chip. You can easily find many sellers like this on the internet.

Another way to play Japanese games on US console is to use some kind of CD Copying software that specialized in game copying. Those CD copying softwares are able to overcome most copy-protection, and are able to remove the Regional Code and convert NTSC signal to PAL signal if you need to. Last time I checked on the internet, such a software cost $40.00 to purchase and I don't have one yet. The good thing is, those software usually let you copy copy-protected CDs and even DVDs.

You can go to www.gamefaqs.com and search for this game yourself, but you won't find anymore information than what I already told you in this e-mail.

Someone told me this game should be a 2-Disc-Set.

    Yours truly,
    Luke Hu

Well, I would be playing the game on a UK console if I found it since that is now where I live. I know about PAL vs NTSC as I had the issue with my videotape collection when I moved here. Luckily VCRs that play NTSC format are fairly common here (they won't tape in it though so I can't make tapes of UK TV and send them back to the US friends. I had a couple of frustrated Red Dwarf fans back in the US after me to tape the later parts of the series but couldn't help them). Most of the 999 sites I came across on Google were in Japanese so that didn't help. I also have the 'Adieu Galaxy Express' film and a couple of the Harlock Saga VHS tapes that I got a few years ago.
