Not sure if there was ever a thread for this, but has anyone pondered the meaning of the names used for the Sith Lords?

Sidious - According to Webster's Dictionary, 'insidious' means "characterized by treachery or slyness" or "more dangers than seems evident" How perfect for Palpatine!

Maul: Pretty obvious, considering the guy fought with a double-edged lightsabre

Tyrannus: Hmmm, derived from 'tyrant' maybe?

    Vader: Derived from 'invader'??

    Anyone elses thoughts???

    Vader is Dutch for "Father."

So now we know Palpatine's true roots!

[Austin Powers: Goldmember]But those damn Dutch....they were so evil.[/APG]

    Some known "Darth"s

Darth Revan (Revan): Revan kept his own name.

Darth Malak (Malak): Malak kept his own name.

Darth Traya (betrayer): "A person who says one thing and does another"

Darth Nihilus (Nihil): Latin for "Nothing"

Darth Sion (Scion): "A descendant or heir"

Darth Ruin (Ruin): "Total destruction or disintegration, either physical, moral, social, or economic"

Darth Bane (Bane): "Fatal injury or ruin" or "A deadly poison"

Darth Millennial (Millennial/Millennium): "Relating to a millennium or span of a thousand years"

Darth Plagueis (Plague): "A widespread affliction or calamity, especially one seen as divine retribution"

Darth Sidious (Insidious): "Working or spreading harmfully in a subtle or stealthy manner"

Darth Maul (Maul): "To injure by or as if by beating"

Darth Tyranus (Tyrant): "An oppressive, harsh, arbitrary person"

Darth Vader (?): Vader is Dutch for "Father"
George Lucas knew a "Gary Vader" in High School
Could be derived from "Invader" (someone who enters by force in order to conquer)

The Sith made sure their young trainees got lots of practice fighting by giving them really sissy names. Maul got so good with a lightsaber because his name actually means "fragile little porcelain mouse." He had to beat other kids up over that Every. Single. Day.

    Darth Vader = "dewdrop-sparkling daisy"

Darth Sidious = "I believe in unicorns and rainbows"

    Darth Tyranus = "I need a hug"

Darth Plagueis = "Smurfs are forever"
