I never understood why QUi GOn was meditating in front of the laser doors while fighting Maul on NAboo. Was it becuase he was preparing himself to become one with the force? and what was the point of those doors?

 

Qui-Gon was taking the opportunity to meditate and try to cleanse himself of any built up aggression he had built up in his mind in the fighting prior.

As for why the gates exist, the practical reason would be to create tense moments in the development of that particular plot line, i.e. to let the tension percolate a bit so that there wasn't just constant fighting fighting fighting. As for the in-world story reason as to why the gates exist, I don't know for certain, but I think the invented reason has to do something with either the regulation of gasses or temperature built up in the energy factory (or whatever you wanna call the area outside the gates with the big towers of energy).

 

He was preparing himself for the fight he was about to resume.

Those doors always reminded me of something out of a video game...
