Had Obi-Wans mind-trick in Mos Eisley failed, what would he have done? Would he have resorted to "aggresive negotiations"? Could he have taken the stormtroopers?

Obi-Wan wouldn't have attempted the mind trick if he knew it wouldn't work. Jedi know these things :D

And I know what you're going to say, but Qui-Gon wasn't aware that Toydarian's were immune. They work on the weak minded, and that's what Qui-Gon sensed in Watto.

    And rightly so.

He could have easily taken out those two stormtroopers, but would have had do deal with the rest of the garrison being aware of his presence.

They would have had to flee to another city to look for a pilot had that happened.

Luke would have learned real quick how to be Obi Wan's right hand man. Or died.

    Watto is a good example.
    So is Jabba.
And it seems pretty obvious that Obi-wan tried the mind trick on Dr. Evanson. It didn't work so he had to resort to his saber.

but you could argue that all imperial stormtroopers are weak-minded

except, maybe, Devin Felth (or was it Davin?) ;)

Did you read the rest of my post regarding Watto?

And I really don't think Luke attempted a mind trick on Jabba. Jabba realized that Luke was doing a mind trick on Bib. Luke just told Jabba what he was going to do. Jabba assumed Luke was because his demand was quite bold.

I also disagree that Obi-Wan attempted a mind trick on Dr. Evazan. He was simply offering a drink to calm him down, which didn't work.

Well he did, after all, make the most profound observation in the entire saga.

    "Look sir! Droids!"

I would say he's definitely on top of things! :D

Well I have seen it enough times to almost be able to quote the entire OT word for word from memory.

"Ya koon catcha ka cu ooni sock, ni"
(Your mind powers will not work on me, boy.) :-B

He was still using the mind trick on Bib Fortuna during this. Jabba assumes he is attempting this on him because most people in their right mind don't just strut into Jabba's palace and place such demands on him. For most, it would be suicide.

I see no evidence that Obi-Wan attempted a mind trick on Dr. Evazan. I don't understand how it is plain to see.

The bottom line is the Jedi know that the mind trick only works on the weak minded. Jedi can sense who is weak minded and who isn't. Jabba knows this, Luke knows this. Even Jabba said to Bib:

    "Koo fah bayas fu!"
    (You weak-minded fool!)

Watto is weak minded, but his species prevents mind tricks to work on him, otherwise Republic Credits would have been fine.

I guess I just respectfully disagree.

Luke used the mind trick on Jabba, but Jabba was not weak minded.
The mind trick can not work on Watto or any of Watto's species. All Toydarians are immuned from the Jedi mind trick, even weak minded Toydarians.
Not all Hutts are immuned. The mind trick did not work on Jabba because he was not weak minded.

Hhmmm, I seem to have started an argument!

Back to the original idea, wouldn`t Obi have been too old in ANH to take on the Stormies?

I can just see the fight that would happen if the mind-trick didn't work...

Obi-Wan flips out of the speeder with his lighsaber, ready to fight. Then Luke runs down as many Stormtroopers as he can while Threepio wails...

I don`t really think Obi would have been up for much flipping - remember the way in which he + Vader fought on the Death Star?

I believe Ben and Luke and the droids would have gone quietly with the troopers until they were in a more private place and then Ben would have done his magic and snuffed out the troopers. I mean, he hardly could have killed all the troopers while sitting in a speeder with all those citizens walking around as witnesses, right?

Grand_Moff_Jawa, that does seem like quite a plausible idea, I like that.

I think he knew what he was doing, but if it had failed maybe he would have to attack and run to other place.
