Mom or Mum?

This came up in the pub. Apparently I say Mom (or mum as you all seem to call it) the American way. So why does me and everyone I know say mom?

i have always said mom. my kids say mom (obviously to Lady_Wiz ). mum sounds poncey.

perhaps it is a midlands thing jon.

I think people need English lesons again
I know too many people who use American words instead of proper English ones.

I had a friend who went to the TA and called his Lefttennant a Luitennant. Although they are spelt the same way its said differently, and he got a serious shouting at for saying it wrong, hes not made the mistake again

I dont like the term Mummy, cos it sounds like the Ancient Egyptian dead person, but Mum is acceptable.

 

considering i have said mom all my life, i am wondering why the term is considered american? even characters on eastenders say "mom" (so i've been told )

Since I am originally from the US I say 'Mom'. However when I get mine a Mother's Day card here it usually says 'Mum'. And since Mother's Day is in March here and in May in the US I have to buy the card 2 months early. But it's the thought that counts..

 

Mom for me also, like old Wiz up there I have always said Mom too as it's a natural progression from mother for me.

Who cares, it's not like the English isn't a mishmash of other languages anyway!
