Thanks to everyone that helped me with my last problem. From advice given there, I've moved on to using After Effects.

i follwed Ryan W's tutorial about how to rotoscope and it looks amazing. Buthow to continue on to rotoscope the next frame of my movie. When I move forward on the time line, the glow stays in the position, leaving me with a floating lightsabre.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks

Before adding any of your glows, you have to keyframe the mask to move with your saber prop for the entirety of the scene, more or less frame-by-frame.

Re-read the tutorial for After Effects word by word. Or don't blink while watching the video.

You missed a very important step.

In order to follow the blade you have to "keyframe" your mask. Once you've drawn the mask on the first frame you have to activate the keyframe option (as Ryan explains navigate through these little arrows on your layer where it says Masks > Mask1 and then click the little stopwatch next to "Mask shape". This creates a keyframe at the first frame of your footage. When you move to the next frame change the position of your mask points to match the position of the blade. AE automaticaly creates another keyframe at this frame. Continue with this throughout the entire clip.

ok, I can get the sabre pre-glow, so just the white shape to fan out etc, but not to move with my sabre footage.

Where'ever I move my shape in the composition, after making a new key frame, wen I rewind to the beginning, instead of my white shape moving between the two postions, it just stays in the same place I last key framed.

Kinda hard to explain, but I hope someone knows what I mean, any ideas?

    Am I just being stupid?

    Thanks

Only click the stopwatch once. Don't click it every time you move the mask, if that's what you're doing. It automatically creates keyframes.

    It's in the manual, honey.

But in any case, it should be under 'Layer' (I think..the second thing after 'File')>Make Movie

Ok, I'm learning, so please bear with me, but I need help again!

I got my lightsabre looking funky and moving in AE. How the hell do I get it from AE to Premiere. I found out how to export it, and export it as an .avi in PAL format (UK) then at 25fps.

But when I import it into my bin in Premiere, the clip is there but theres my black solid right in the way. I doubled back to make sure it was a screen layer and it is. Am I missing out a step, or exporting it wrong or what?

    Any help appreciated, thanks

You should be compositing your lightsaber on to your footage in After Effects. This is the sane way to do things, as you already have your footage synched. I know Ryan's tutorial explains how to do this as well so i suggest you check out the section about applying the sabers over the plate.

Yeah I done that. Everything works fine. What I need to know is how do I get my composition into premiere?

If you're looking to take the footage with your lightsabers on it into Premiere, all you have to do is goto 'Composition > Make Movie' and render it out as a video file. Then simply import it into Premiere and you're done!

(Be sure not to compress it if you're going to be running it through another program before the final output. Using AVI Uncompressed is usually a good idea but look out for the file size. ;))

    Hope that helps!

I may have done this the hard way, but since I didn't know what I wanted from my shooting... I did it this way...

I edited my whole video in premiere and would cut each scene perspectively. Then when I wanted to edit that piece, I'd export it out to a different file name and import it to AE 5.5. Once I was done editing it, I'd save it as the same filename that was originally in premiere. I think I ran into an error once when I had the premiere project open and did it that way. All I had to do was re-add the same clip back in the same spot.

By the way, thanks all to have helped me with my questions. I'm slowly but surely cranking out the roto job on my 3 minute video. Did a killer job with the sound effects thanks to links peeps gave me from here. :)
