I have no idea if this has already been posted or what, but I watched a really cool show on TV that tried to prove the Exodus scientifically.

The theory states that the events, more specifically the ten plagues on eygpt, where caused by a massive volcanic explosion on the island of Santorini in the Meditteranean Sea.

Near the time which parallels the exodus, Santorini erupted with 10 times the force of Mt. Saint Helens. On that specific day, the wind was blowing in the direction of south-east, toward Egypt. The wind would have carried the ash across the sea and covered the skies over Egypt. As known from Mt. St. Helens, ash can cloud the sky so heavily that it makes day turn to night, and can cause hail and whatnot. Note hail was one of the plagues. Also, the ash would have polluted the Nile River. Now, a few years back, a river in the USA turned to blood because pollution killed the fish population. The same would have occured with the ash. Dead fish would have been everywhere, turning the Nile to blood, and the insect population would have flourished, the locusts. Also, the frogs would have migrated from the Nile inland to evade the polluted waters. People in that area in the USA when it happened there experienced swores from the water and/or bugs, which is another plague.

Now, the actually parting of the Red Sea was explained as follows:

    - the collapse of the island into the sea would have created a massive mega-tsunami, which would have headed toward Egypt (scientifically proven that it did). Now, a few hours before the mega-tsunami hit, it would have drawn back the waters in the swamp lands in the Nile Delta, before surging forward with a wall of water.

    - the translation "Red Sea", has been denoted as a mistranslation, the real meaning of the word is "Reed Sea". This area can be found near the Nile Delta, between Egypt and Sinai.

So, there are the basic facts from the TV program.

    Thoughts anyone?

Was the book "Unearthing Atlantis" by Charles Pellegrino?

God drowned the whole Egyptian army in just three feet of water!

There's more than one Reed Sea, you know. And there is a Reed Sea where the water will split if a hard enough wind blows.

    Think about that, though.

If the wind blew hard enough to separate the water, don't you think that the Israelites (not to mention the egyptian cavalry) would have had just a little bit of trouble getting across?

    Peace,

Well, the tsunami that would've hit the Egyptian army would kill them instantly.

It's an interesting possible explanation for it.

Was the book "Unearthing Atlantis" by Charles Pellegrino?

Much as I thought highly of this book once, I have to say I'm not as sure of it now, based off of his two published works on the Titanic. Mr. Pellegrino takes a rather novelistic approach to his research, and sometimes doesn't clearly delineate what is to be considered as factual and fictional.

Having said that, though, I still do agree with the basic principle, that the Santorini explosion was the basis of the Atlantis legend. As for it being the basis of the Red Sea parting, I'm not so sure.

    Obi-Zahn Kenobi:

"God drowned the whole Egyptian army in just three feet of water!"

Actually, scientists say it would have been more like 6 or 7 feet.

    Vaderize03:

"If the wind blew hard enough to separate the water, don't you think that the Israelites... would have had just a little bit of trouble getting across?"

Actually, it was not the wind, but the water. Note that when waves roll into shore, the water receeds for a fraction of a momment before the wave hits. The same would have happened, but on a larger scale.

Bleh. I can't stand these condescending interpretations of Biblical accounts. If you don't believe in the parting of the Red Sea, that's absolutely fine! Why find this ludicrous middle ground?

To combine this explanation with the Biblical account results in something even more difficult to believe than the traditional theistic view. Come on.

It's not a matter of finding a middle ground, but finding proof to show that the writings in the Bible have scientific proven truths.
