This is a debate that his been going down in one of the ST threads, that I thought would be interesting to get an overall feel for amongst Star Wars fans. Who do you believe is the most evil character that we have seen in Star Wars up to this point?
Palpatine to me. Has that understated, cunning, corrupting influence. In ROTS at the opera house and in ROTJ when tempting Luke to give into his anger, he seems to be peak evil to me.
Other candidates may be Darth Bane, because the thought bomb even tortured the souls of the Jedi and Sith after death, and the Sith Lord who first had the idea to trap the spirit of his enemies into crystals. Even Palpatine didn't do something so horrifying... The 2 Tusken Raiders shooting people at the Boonta Eve Pod Race and then celebrating. That is twisted and evil.
@Darth Caliban, Bane was a great villain too. The trilogy of books that focused on him was awesome because of that.
Agree. Going by the movies alone, my choice would be those Tuskens who actively took part in the abduction and torture of Shmi. I don't know how many of them were in on it. And I'm NOT saying the entire camp, only the ones that did the actual torture. Who knows.... maybe they were the same who shot at the podracers??? Even Sidious didn't stoop to that level of cruelty (OK, those final few minutes of his life where he tortured Luke with Sith lightning was pretty cruel, but in that case he had very personal reasons, he didn't just do it for fun). Sure he wanted power, and got rid of his enemies quickly and efficiently. From his point of view he may actually really have convinced himself that he was doing a good thing, doing away with corruption and an ineffective bureaucratic Republic government. He said "....and we shall have peace". In some way I think he actually meant it. He did want peace, only the way in which he tried to achieve it was evil. In any case he had a purpose, along with deep faith in the Sith code/religion/ideals or whatever. The Tuskens on the other hand tortured for no purpose at all, just for fun and enjoyment. I want to make it clear that I am NOT defending Sidious in any way, just that he is not the ONLY evil in the saga. You don't have to be a Sith to be evil! Also, sometimes I enjoy playing the devil's advocate, just for the sake of argument.
Rose is up there, violently "stunning" a person she doesn't even know because of suspected desertion.
Palps did more harm to the galaxy at large than any other single person, and he reveled in it. Winner.
A case could be made that Tarkin fits that profile. He may not be a megalomaniac with astonishing powers, but he's just as dangerous. He doesn't revel in his villainy, he just does it. He's a cold, ruthless, ambitious man who will do anything to make the Empire come out on top. He's basically become a soulless figure, the epitome of the concept of "the banality of evil".
@Kenneth Morgan, yes, I do think you have a strong argument for Tarkin as well. He is the one who coldly orders the destruction of an entire world after all.
It's hard to say that Tarkin is the most evil character based on that though. All the imperials in that meeting room must have known what the Death Star was built to do, and no one seemed to have the slightest problem with it. The only difference between them and Tarkin is that Tarkin has the power to actually order the firing. Put one of the other imperials in Tarkin's place, the outcome would be similar. Sidious is different. Try replacing him with another person, giving that person power with the force, wealth, and an opportunity to get into politics. Will that person manipulate a galactic war, wipe out the Jedi Order, and transform the Republic into a tyrannical regime? I believe very, very few people would do that.
Darth Sidious in first (we never see him care about anyone), with the Son of Mortis in second (only person he cared about was his sister).
I'd have to say Sidious out of all those in the poll. The lengths he is willing/has gone to to take and maintain power are chilling. I think the worst part is his absolute disregard for the survival of others, especially those who support him. Notably, encouraging Anakin to kill Dooku, and ordering the Death Star II to destroy the Forest Moon to stop the rebels in the ROTJ deleted scene - despite the untold number of imperial personnel on the surface.
The Bespin Ice Cream Man because he ran off with his wonderful machine, dooming Cloud City to never enjoy ice cream ever again.
the darkside. I'm not talking about the mystical energy field that surrounds all living things (the force) but the dark that lurks in the hearts and minds in every single one in that list. And even those that aren't in that list which is every other character. A similar question would be who is the most 'good' in SW, if we were to be objective about it...no one would able to claim such a title.
