I think that instead of making Naboo a new planet in the prequel trilogy, it should have been Alderaan. Think about it, we would have become really attached to it and we would feel more hurt when it's destroyed in episode IV. All we get, however, is a 30 second scene at the end of Episode III. We don't even really get to see Alderaan, which makes the planet's destruction seem not very powerful. Padme should have been queen of Alderaan, not Naboo. That way, Anakin and Luke would have been raised on Tatooine and Padme and Leia on Alderaan. We could have actually seen who lives on Alderaan and get attached to them. If Naboo would have been destroyed in episode IV, the impact would have been much greater because we would know that Padme's grave and family, all of the Gungans, everything would have been destroyed, but all we see is Bail Organa and his wife. If I were George Lucas, I would have just made Naboo Alderaan. That would have been so much cooler...

I don't think it would have been wise to hide Leia on her mother's home planet had Naboo been Alderaan instead.

Overall, I think the destruction of a planet full of innocent beings being killed for nothing already has a big impact.

But yeah, it would have been emotional to see Naboo get destroyed.

And it was "wise" to hide Luke on his fathers home planet.

Actually, its not all that bad. Luke had a Jedi master protecting him and I doubt that Vader would have any reason to go back there. He resented Cliegg and Owen for not going back out after his mother(read the book on just how bad the Tusken's kicked butt). His mother died there, he was a slave there...really nothing there and it was out of the Republic and controlled by the Hutts.

A good place for people who don't want to be found to get lost.

There are two reasons that Luke was hidden there. One, it was the only family he had, and two, Obi Wan came to realize that Vader would never return there for fear of reawakening Anakin. Anyway, Naboo could have been Alderaan and it would have been a good transition of Palpatine being a Senator from there and Bail taking over once he became Supreme Chancellor. I agree that it makes less sense hiding Leia if Alderaan was her mother's home planet though.

Would Vader return to the planet his wife was from and they planned to raise their children? Perhaps a visit there is just as unlikely as him returning to Tatooine.

Alderaan could have easily been Naboo. I agree. It would have made the destruction of the planet that much more powerful to watch.

When the decision was made to hide Luke on Tatooine it had nothing to do with Vader not wanting to come there because they all thought that Anakin had died on Mustafar. It was only afterwards that Obi-wan realised that Vader had survived and came to that realisation.

I think if Naboo had been Alderaan, we would have expected Vader to say something about it to Tarkin in episode 4 before blowing it up. I think its fine as is. Also, since by the time of episode 4, Jar-Jar may have been in control of Naboo and he wouldnt have been any threat to the empire. :p

I don't think Tarkin would have destroyed Palpatine's home planet.

I don't think Naboo should necessarily been Alderaan. However, people tend to forget why Alderaan and Tatooine were chosen to protect the twins - because the Sith could not sense them there, according to Kenobi in ROTS. Those planets, along with Dagobah apparently, have some properties that make detection of force use or force qualities difficult. If Anakin was indeed a creation of the Sith and if Tatooine had such quality, is it any surprise that Tatooine would be chosen to conceal a creation of such potential power as Anakin by the Sith? Is it any surprise that it would later be chosen to hide his son?

Well, it's eu, but Vader did go to Naboo to kill Jedi who had been given sanctuary by the Queen. She and the Jedi were killed by Vader and the 501st, which is when they earned the nickname "Vader's Fist". Alderaan was much safer for Leia and Tatooine kept Vader at bay like Kryptonite to a Kryptonian.

In the real world, Lucas wanted separate worlds for both Padme and Bail Organa. Thus showing that Bail would oppose Palpatine, while Padme supported him for a time. It created the uncertain nature Bail has about bringing Padme in on the Delegation of 2,000.

Just make Palps from a different planet. I agree that Naboo should've been Alderaan.

I think there's such a thing as TOO many coincedences. They both have major roles to play, even though we see Naboo much more than Alderaan. It's also too neat and tidy that Luke would be sent to his father's planet and Leia to her mother's.

If Palps is from a different planet, why would he care of the Queen's plight or generate sympathy to get him elected Chancellor.
There's not much, but just enough to make it a tad neccessary for the really important parts.
Palpatine's scheme to become Chancellor = important.
Caring moreso about Alderaan blowing up when people have apparently cared for thirty years already = not so much.
The plot (despite what people say) does come first. Where it happens comes when the FX and artists come in. "Yeah, this needs to happen, I'm calling the planet Ploponewwi, start designing."

I think it would have been powerful, interesting, and relevant. I think any problems that might have arisen from this could easily have been fixed.

I agree with the basic argument for Naboo being Alderaan, however, someone brought up a good point:

I think if Naboo had been Alderaan, we would have expected Vader to say something about it to Tarkin in episode 4 before blowing it up.

Why, because it would be Padme's homeworld? What's he going to say? "No, Padme....she....she's alive! Alive I say! Nnnnooooooo!"

RebelScum77, yeah, hiding the twins on their parent's homeworlds would be too tidy. Unlike Anakin making 3PO, R2 onboard the Queen's ship, and Chewie knowing Yoda.

    Alderaan = Padme's homeworld....too much to ask for. [face_peace]

    Wascally
If Palps is from a different planet, why would he care of the Queen's plight or generate sympathy to get him elected Chancellor.

Answer me this: why would the same senators who didn't feel sympathetic enough for the Queen's and Chancellor's homeworld to support throwing the federation out turn around and feel sympathetic for the Queen's and Chancellor's plight when it came time to elect a chancellor?

It would have created a so called "plot hole", especially after what Anakin said in AOTC about liking Naboo so much.

Do you think he still has an affinity for things like that after he turns to the darkside? Come on.

    EDIT

A better question would be: Why, after the senator is nearly killed by assassins twice does she hide on her home planet? Brilliant hiding spot. They'll never find me there!

Maybe not, but it would have been very odd if he didnt say something, good or bad, when Tarkin targeted Naboo. Face it, cries of "plot hole" and "GL raped my childhood" would have been all over the place. :p

    Like what?

What did he say when his friggin Star Destroyer was flying over his own planet in Star Wars?

    He's all business. Evil business.

He doesn't look longingly out the window and say "Hey, those podraces were wizard".

She didn't even like the idea of going to hide. Hence going to Naboo, a planet that they know very well and has it's own security force. Not to mention the Gungan Army. It's obvious they weren't really hiding, since she goes home and sits out in the open with Anakin. It wasn't so much hiding as it was going home, since she didn't want to go to some other planet.

I'm pretty sure that Lucas considered this idea - but then thought it better to create a totally distinct paradiscial planet. There is such a thing as too many connections in this sprawling saga. While Alderaan's inclusion might have been profound on a number of levels, it's enough to know that it's Leia's home and utterly defenceless against the malignant Empire. It's destruction is even more random and shocking because of the suddeness with which it is disposed of - something that would be less jolting had we got to know its culture, its people, its architecture and its landscape for an entire trilogy beforehand. I appreciate this is where people may argue the exact opposite but what I'm saying is this: we are deprived of Alderaan; just like Obi Wan and Luke are deprived of reaching there. It's this treasure of a planet, that through the Empire's dire meddling, we will never know. At least we could still cling to the memory of it had we been given the chance to become familiar with it - but no. There's a different kind of pathos inherent in being shown so little of this galactic pearl and then having it obliterated before our eyes.

There's no "should have" about it for me. None whatsoever. I'm very glad Lucas chose to give us something new and separate.

Yeah, but Tarkin wasnt going to blow up Tatoonine. It isnt quite the same thing.
