Surprisingly, I am having a tremendous amount of trouble finding a decent name for a droid. I gave up one night and wrote down 5-D8 into my production notebook, but I'm not entirely sure I like that at all.

Basic information for the droid is simple - the droid is humanoid, of an original concept/model, extremely annoying and confusing in dialogue, and serves as a protocol droid for a sleazy spy.

Anyone have any hot ideas for a relative droid name?

    Not hot ideas, but suggestions:

Numbers (I named one Arthur for R4D6)

    Sounds (Wedge's Mynock)

Namesakes (Cappie for Jaina's friend Capstan and Tonin in Wraith Squadron for Aton)

I think I'm going for letters/numbers, perhaps a combination that generates a namesake like threepio.

The only hint or direction I've been pointed in is to shoot for a comibination of 4 numbers/letters (4 syllables).

    But again, no real idea.

I started with a name I liked and worked backwards to it. I wanted to call him Mick and ended up designating him M-1CK.

    According to books and movies:

C-XXX or TC-XX appears to be protocol droids

M-XXX are military droids of one type or another

    2-1B droids are medical/surgical droids

R2-XX, R5-XX, and R[face_skull]X are all different upgrades of astromech droids, R2s being the oldest and R8s the newest

I'd say roll dice if you don't care or pick a name and adapt if you do.

Depends. I usually work out the serial number by what it's name is: for example, Helix comes from R15 G9 - Gee Nine, Gene ine, Gene, Helix. Not a very good example, but still... [face_plain]

Here's some epiphany helpers for ya:

You could take numerology into account. 7 is perfection, 6 is humanity, etc, etc. I'm sure there's a webpage somewhere just filled with that stuff.

the first three digits of pi are always good. As well as other obsure physics equations. (FMA, A2B2-C2, etc)

42 never fails. That's the answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything according to "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"

3 is on average the best remembered number in the English speaking world.

    12 is the second best.

26 couldn't hurt. Number of letters in the alphabet.

If you have a favorite number or letter, that's always a plus.

You could take the Vanity License Plate route. 4-LOM's name actually stands for "4 the Love Of Money"

    Hope that helps ya.

In the Tales from the Cantina book there appears a protocol droid named K-8LR, which fits the C-3PO pattern, if you look close enough. ;)

Some other droid names can be found in computer games.

OTOGA-222 is a pit droid (unlike the common pit droids),
IG-88 is ... well an IG droid ;) , member of a small series, as the Tales from the Bounty Hunters tells us (originally coming from an role playing game adventure, I was told)
5D6-RA7 or short : RA-7 is the "Death Star Droid"

I think the Databank at www.starwars.com contains much more. ;)
