I made this into a new topic because it is a finding that creates many new thoughts on Midichlorians and their origin. How did George Lucas perceived the name? It is a reference to mitochondria, that's for sure but why name them midichlorians?

But first, a small introduction: How many of you know the manga and anime series "Neon Genesis Evangelion"? The anime (animated series) was created back on 1995, while the manga (comic book) series concept was
created ano 1994 and released 1995 in Japan and 1998 in the USA - one full year before TPM was released...

It is a story about kids entering giant robots in order to defend Earth from aliens (not very original, I know). The backstory however is quite interesting: Why only certain kids can do it? What are these alien creatures and why are they attacking only our heroes' base?

What WE need to know is that the kids-pilots are selected by a German undercover agency, they undergo a series of medical tests and then, a complete detailed file is sent to Earth's defence force HQ and they take the child as a pilot.

Now, in one of the mangas, a new pilot (pro)file is sent to HQ. There is one page that depicts the file of the new candidate. On it, we can see varius medical details, written in German, like gene sequencing, adaptation harmonics, etc. What is incredible though, is that somewhere is clearly written MIDICHLORIAN and next to it is a number sequence! I have posted the picture, so take a look for your selfs...

Download it and keep it in your hard discs, because I don't know how much it's going to be online. The picture has not been altered, I guarantee you that.

So, how did this happen? If I'm not mistaken, Lucas begun writting TPM on 1994-5. At the same time, a Japanese script team begun writting "Evangelion". Did they collaborate on finding a name? I don't think so. Do midichlorians exist for real and are used in medical exams? I don't think so. Does Lucas read Japanese comics, before they are even released? Nah...
How could the same term, concerning blood tests, occur in two different sci-fi universes? It's even spelled the same way! Both stories were written almost at the same time, who copied who? And don't tell me that Japanese guys were present as TPM was shooting back on 1997. None of us knew of midichlorians, it was one of TPM's best kept secrets.

Unfortunately, the term doesn't get explained further on the comic. It's just there, only once in the whole saga and it doesn't play any role. If you have more questions about the comic, feel free to ask me.

I'm curius to see your reactions... Bring it on!

Talk about mysteries, huh? It wouldn't surprise me if one day we learn from the news that they exist and they're the elementary susbstance of all life or something... What if it is something, a knowledge that only a small circle of people has access to...

    People said that, when Men in Black came out, it was a conspiracy from Hollywood to prepare us for a future alien contact:oops: Why else, in the last 30-35 years, limitless sci-fi films would be created? Star Wars, Alien, Close Encounters, MIB, Idependence Day,etc... So, why not Star Wars to introduce midichlorians, while in Japan, through another popular form of entertainment (mangas), people will get their first glimpse.8-}

Conspiracy theories, Masonism, mumble, rumble... Star Wars, part of a conspiracy masterplan[face_clown]
    I must stop, I know...

Wow, that's rather interesting. I would have to agree that there must be some shared source for both Eva and SW...the word is too odd for their not to be and a collaboration between the two groups for one word doesn't really seem to make sense.

    This is very intriguing.

I'm not saying GL wouldn't have pulled from Anime, but an obscure comic like this? I tend to think it is coincidence, and yet, that sure is a lot of coincidence.

I think the timing is coincidence. Amazingly. At the same time, if Manga comics are from Japan, it could be an "old" Japanese word or equivalent used in the past lets say from the feudal period, if we're talking origins. Maybe?

Let's also not forget GL gets inspiration from Japanese culture, writers/authors/story tellers from way back in the early 70's or so. ie. The Vader idea came from a t.v. series (or was that movies?) in 1972. He said so himself (seen in some archives).

So what I?m getting at is that Midi?s may not be a completely new thought/test. GL here is just implementing them in his movies as his original area of expertise is Anthropology. His research has been done eons ago ;)

Well, also, you guys are forgetting a certain scientific fact...it could be possible that both of these sources are drawing the word from mitochondria, which are basically the "power houses" in our cellular structures. They were once primitive bacteria that bonded with other bodies to form eukaryotic cells. It's possible given their nature as a type of generator for human cells that Lucas (and the Eva series) drew from them as a source of power. In Lucas' case, claiming that they generated a life current of the Force.

Otherwise, I'm just going to say it's a coincidence. (Though I'm surprised Eva came out in those years...I thought it'd been around for much longer. Hmph. Shows you how much time I spend researching my anime. :) )

    I do Ti-chi
and my Ti-chi master (he is really good) keeps on going about 'Midiridions' (sp??) that they our 'life Force' our 'Chi' and that doing this move dose this and that etc. . .that is where i think MR GL got his 'Midichlorians' because MR GL got alsorts of things from the Japanese, like Qui-gons name, and the idea of jedi being like samaries etc

(so sorry about the really bad spelling, its late at night.)

    Nice one Kooky. :)

Don't worry about spelling. We're only here for entertainment purposes, not legal cases and such ;)

I want to point out some details, in order to understand what we have here.

1994 - George Lucas begins writting TPM draft
1994 - Japanese guys write EVA story

1995 - George Lucas finishes TPM script
1995 - EVA comic book is released in Japan

1997 - Lucas begins shooting on TPM

    1998 - EVA comic released in the U.S. ("midichlorians" appear in EVA:Book 6 - Issue 1)
1998 - Lucas still shooting TPM, 1st teaser appears
(no mention of midichlorians in Star Wars universe so far...)

1999 - TPM is released, midichlorians are now canon in the GFFA.

I'm rewriting the dates because I think I wrote my introduction in such a way that some may not understand some details concerning the procces. Fact is, IMO, EVA midis existed before TPM.

Now,Stryphe wrote: "I'm not saying GL wouldn't have pulled from Anime, but an obscure comic like this? I tend to think it is coincidence, and yet, that sure is a lot of coincidence"

I agree, it is too much of a coincidence to create a completely new term such as this. Midichlorians, both in EVA universe as well in the GFFA are detected through blood tests and determine if a person is appropriate to enter an order or team of special individuals. It's a great pity that EVA midichlorians aren't explained further.

Kooky, that is very very interisting what you're saying there. I can accept the Midichlorians - Midiridions connection, the words seem to have same roots and their meaning can be associated. I understand that the pronunciation is international, that is, an Asian guy says it the same way an American would, right?

Um, you do realize the anime and the manga are the SAME series, right? I wouldn't exactly call Evangelion obscure at all.

No, obscure doesn't fit with Evangelion at all. Sure, sometimes it gets complicated, far fetched and leaves many questions unanswered but IMO it is the best anime ever, up there with DBZ. It has a deep philosophical and religius background, plays with our contemporary beliefs about humanity and God and it's fun at the same time! Check it out and once you pass by the first 2-3 episodes, you will love it. I know I did!

It's one of the animes that all anime-fans must watch, so I'm sure I'll get around to it eventually. When I decide that I want my head to explode again *has survived watching Serial Experiments Lain*

And just for the record...I HATE mark-ups sometimes. I always forget which boards use HTML and which use BBC (that's what the [] one is called, right?)
