    New Console
    Infinium Labs

Don't think the gaming industry can support four consoles, however.
It is purported to be online only.

    It's called The Phantom.

A Tampa Bay area technology company, Infinium Labs Corporation, has announced they will develop and market a new game console that will outperform the Xbox, Playstation 2, and GameCube.

The company plans to market a high performance gaming console and delivery system to provide consumers with options and capabilities that are not available in today's marketplace. The console will appeal to the hard-core gamer and the high end consumer electronic purchaser. This next generation game console provides a robust, fault tolerant delivery system that supports games on demand, game rentals, game demos, seamless upgrades and patch management. The game console is an ALWAYS ON BROADBAND DEVICE. It is easy enough for children to use independently yet so advanced it exceeds the needs of hard-core gamers.

    ·Fastest console on the market
    ·Broadest selection of preloaded games
    ·Cross Platform capabilities
·State of the art design and architecture
    ·Advanced accessories and wireless capabilities
·Online connectivity for multi player gaming
    ·Seamless upgrades and patch management
·A multi tiered subscription service that meets the needs of casual, moderate and hard-core game players
·Demo games before purchasing or subscribing
    ·Games on demand
    ·Game Rentals

We'll see if this ever goes anywhere.

I wish them luck, I really do. It's not that I think the market can't support 4 consoles honestly; it probably could, however the only reason MS and Sony did it successfully was the fact that they have notarity and they have the $$$$ to take a loss to keep themselves afloat till the profit shows up. Not to mention they're jumping in too early. We all know the PS3 and XB2 are around the corner so while it's king today, it won't be the next year when those consoles come out.

Who knows; maybe it will succeed against all odds. Thanks for the info BOM.

Sony's clincher was backwards compatibility with PS1.

I'm talking about the first console JP-30. The first console with make or break this system, whereas MS and Sony have the cash to have a slow fist console only to pick up more with the next one.

And I think it's safe to say the PS1 was a success on all fronts.

Isn't the maximum number of consoles that we had out was three at a time?

Last I checked, the GameCube was leading or at least tied with the Xbox in terms of sales. Why oh why are there never any tracking numbers for consoles? I have tried for a year to find out how many consoles Nintendo and Microsoft have sold respectively.

Actualy the Gamecube has been getting beat out for the last eight months in North America. It's been beat by the Xbox in europe putting it in third place there and it is getting own3d in Australia.

Xbox Outsells Gamecube Seven Months In A Row (North America)

    Xbox Number Two In Europe.

    Gamecube Owned In Australia

Not to mention the fact that sports titles are being cancelled for the cube and some third party developers are quietly pulling their games from the Cubes line up.

As for this new supposed console it's doubtful that this thing is going to get off the ground. Even if it does it will most likely die a quick death.

BUT... GameCube is Number 2 in worldwide sales.

Besides, it is far from a flop.

The only flop Nintendo had was Virtua Boy.

They always make a good profit due to non expensive systems and of course, their software sales.

I mean, look at the N64.

It did not sell even close to what the SNES and NES sold.

Yet... the N64 was still a success. It always brought in a good profit for Nintendo.

Just not SNES/NES type of money.

    ~Shudder~ Virtua Boy...

This sounds very interesting. It will probably get moderate sales at best.

Speaking of Virtual Boy, I think this console will share the same fate.

Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, and heck, even SEGA to a degree are all established, respected companies. People buy their consoles because they know there will be developer support. This relatively unknown company doesn't stand a chance in this industry.

Exactly. If people want an overpriced console, they'll get a PS2. ;)

This console will never happen. Just look at their site and the news release.

They don't give a single spec for the system- just a claim to 'outperform all others'. They make silly claims like "download system upgrades online". What, like a new processor? They claim it will 'change the way people play games forever' and yet they don't list a single major developer creating games for it. If it's launching in less than 11 months, where's the support?

Oh yeah... it's a subscription based service. Pay per play. Wooo- everyone's really going to want that. But waitaminute- there's already 32,000 games available! What the hell?! Is this a system to play bargain bin PC titles or something? What 32,000 games could it have?!

Oh, and let's look at the pictures of it- 4 basic 'artists conceptions' of what the case will look like, and 1 'artists conception' of what the box will look like. That's it. What people need and want is real information- something that is grossly lacking on that site.

The whole thing seems like a big PR scam, if you ask me. Not to mention the name "Phantom" suggests something that isn't really there...

Watch- 10-1 odds you never hear from this company again...

I agree. This thing has "Project X/Nuon" written all over it. I remember Mac at one time was developing an Apple OS based console. With 32,000 games already available... I think it might be a PC emulator or something. I don't think the PSX even has 2500 games out.

    >>>BUT... GameCube is Number 2 in worldwide sales.<<<

    Sorry but your wrong.
    North America: Xbox 2nd
    Europe: Xbox 2nd
    Australia: Xbox 2nd
Korea: Xbox is in 1st place, it's actualy beating out the PS2 at a 3 to 1 ratio. The Gamecube has zero presence there.
    Japan: Gamecube 2nd

In order for the gamecube to be in second place it needs to be doing some serious buisness in Japan to make up for all the slack. Which it isn't.

Over in Kyoto, however, the news wasn't quite so hot. In an interview with the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata reported that his company would likely not meet their GameCube userbase goal of 8 million before the end of 2002

Now available in all markets, Xbox(TM) turned in a strong performance for the holiday season, selling more than 8 million units since the product launched on Nov. 15, 2001

Not only is it losing in hardware sales but the Xbox is beating the pants off the cube in games sales. The Xbox has the highest game attache rate of any console to date.

But how can that be when the Xbox only has crappy games that will be out on the PC. ;)

Anyway I agree that an unknown is 99.99% likely to fail miserably. Maybe they should develop some games for the current console generation. People have to at least know your name to associate a level of quality to.

Now if say IBM or Intel made a console, then maybe I could see 4 consoles going at once. I think while there's winners and losers there's enough $$$ going around, at it seems to be growing every year, despite the economy.

Once again, Microsoft monopolizes yet another industry because of its sheer size and PR department.

Whoever it was in my state's legislature that decided to settle with them out of court isn't getting my vote anymore...

This isn't a new console - its a PC without a keyboard. They haven't announced specs yet because they might upgrade before the release depending on what the state of the market is then.

Its a nice idea (kinda) in theory to have a machine where you can download software updates, game demos etc etc. BUT, isn't that exactly what we do with our PCs anyways ? There are like 50,000 downloadable freeware games at download.com, or rocketdownload.com or zdnet or whatever.

    49,900 of them are crap.

People are not going to be fooled by this. They'll buy a proper PC at enjoy the gaming experience while being able to surf, program or word process.

There's no way I can see this system retailing for less than about $700, which is just plain stoopid.

Buy a PC. (face it, they are more powerful than any games console - albeit with a price tag)

With it's online only feature, this system seems doomed to fail before it even gets off the ground. I know I'm not buying into it.

Saw Infinium's site, and I must say...I've never seen such prettied up B.S. before in my life. :p Are these guys for real? These neophyte upstarts think they can compete with Microsoft and Sony? I saw no pics of anything concrte. The image of their console is just that: a clipart image of a conceptual device with a controller that awfully resembles the Xbox's S-Controller. These guys are full of hot air.
