In theory, you could understand the NJO in broad strokes by only reading the "hardcover" books (though most are now in paperback as well), but you will skip several good books and some important events. The e-book and Emissaries of the Void short stories are the only things really skippable, as everything else sets up at least one or more elements that come into play later in a significant manner. For the full enjoyment of the NJO, it's best to read all the hardcover and paperback books.

This is the list of all NJO titles, present and future:

(novels once published in hardcover are notated with a *)

    Vector Prime*
    Dark Tide 1: Onslaught
    Dark Tide 2: Ruin
Agents of Chaos 1: Hero's Trial
Agents of Chaos 2: Jedi Eclipse
    Balance Point*
    Recovery (e-book)
    Edge of Victory 1: Conquest
    Edge of Victory 2: Rebirth
    Star By Star*
    Dark Journey
    Enemy Lines 1: Rebel Dream
    Enemy Lines 2: Rebel Stand
    Traitor
    Destiny's Way*
    Ysleia (e-book)
    Force Heretic 1: Remnant
    Force Heretic 2: Refugee
    Force Heretic 3: Reunion
    The Final Prophecy
    The Unifying Force*

The e-books can be skipped without losing much of the story.

It's best to read them all and not skip.

Don't bother reading the E-books, they suck.

Well, if you get the E-books attached to the paperback versions of some of the novels, you might as well read them.

Whenever it came time for me to read Dark Journey, I skipped it because I was too excited to read a new Allston Star Wars novel (Rebel Dream was already out at the time.) I figured I would come back to it, but I never did. Is it worth reading?

Dark Journey is probably the worst of the NJO, but it is still important to the overall story.
