Was anyone else freaked out to hear the captain of the Invisible Hand speaking with a "normal" accent? Do you think Lucas did this for PC reasons after all the flack he took after TPM came out?

Well, Lucas started changing the accents back in AOTC, where we had Nute Gunray's lackey speaking in a strange WWF wrestler voice ("We must get the starships back into space!")

It's possible he did it for PC reasons. Lucas always insisted he meant for the Trade Federation goombas to speak with Transylvanian accents, which fits in with the motif of classic horror movie monsters siding with the Sith (Christopher Lee played Dracula in a bunch of Hammer films, General Grevious sounds suitably Transylvanian, ROTS Sisious resembles the Coppala version of Dracula, Peter Cushing starred with Lee in many Hammer films in a variety of roles, Jabba the Hutt somewhat resembles the Blob.) Still, most people thought they sounded Japanese. Some took it personally.

After 13 years of speaking it a lot they should have no accent anymore, hell, after 1 or 2 years, but oh well.

That guy sounded like "Dude, General Grevious, those two Jedi are like totally running away. Dude!"

That's exactly what I thought! [face_laugh] The first time we saw the movie, my wife turned and gave me this "What tha' hell?" look as soon as he started talking. Does anyone know if the good captain has a name?

It wasn't the same lackey, not the one from phanotm menace or Revenge of the Sith, he only appeared in that movie, so it wasnt really changed, it was just someone else

Yeah, I know it was another dude, and I can't figure out what his name is, despite my internet access. My searching skills must be weak!

The lackey from AOTC (they call him Lott Dod, but I call him Gilramos Libkath) is in ROTS as well, but no lines. You'll see him the next time you watch it...he's in a tan outfit and a round hat with a flat top.

I actually thought the captain of the Invisible Hand's voice was very cool. He is related to Daultay Dofine, and his last name is Dofine, but I can't recall his first name. I believe it starts with an "L" but no promises on that one.

LOL, the first thing I thought of when I heard him speak was that he sounded like a California surfer dude.

I was thinking it was strange myself, because here on Earth everyone talks the same way, so I would have thought that the entire population of a planet in the Star Wars galaxy would also have just one accent, to be more realisitc [face_thinking]

I sense much sarcasm in you.

BTW I like your sig. I also think there should be prequels before that one, Star Wars -1, -2, -3: The Derogatory Chronicles. (Cuz they are very negative).

I read on IMDb that in the multinational versions of TPM, the Neimoidians had different accents depending on what language the film was in. In Germany, they had French accents. In the Italian and Czech versions, they had a heavy Russian accent. Interesting, eh?:-B

I also noticed in TPM that all the Naboo pilots had Brooklyn accents, which for some reason I really enjoy. I guess because at the time, it was different from standard American or British, which was all we had in the OT.

I noticed in TPM there was this middle-aged woman that looked totally out of place as a Naboo Pilot.

I guess you've got to figure that the Naboo Navy doesn't see much action, being a small trade system and all. They probably got all the reserve pilots they could muster, and she happened to be around and capable of flying.
