I just found this at cinescape.com:

    >>>In interview carried in the current print issue of CINESCAPE magazine, CHARLIE?S ANGELS director McG is talking about his work to bring another famous franchise to the big screen: SUPERMAN.

?SUPERMAN is looking good,? McG says. ?I have seen a draft of the script, which I could not possibly be more enthusiastic about. That is ideally the next picture ? right after CHARLIE?S ANGELS 2 to go right into SUPERMAN.?

This talk comes after weeks of rumors McG has departed the project. So after so many years of development, which ranged from scripts killing Superman off to ones hinting they?re sequels to the Christopher Reeve series of the late 1970s and early 1980s, what?s the current incarnation?

?It?s a genesis story and it tells the story of Superman from day one ? Krypton, Smallville ? all the way through, the whole nine yards,? McG told us. ?[ALIAS writer/creator] J.J. Abrams is a fantastic talent and I?m delighted to be partnered with him on that? Right now, my energy is going into the one Superman genesis story, because no one has seen it since the [Richard] Donner pictures in the ?70s, and that was sort of in a pre-ILM world. I want to have the opportunity to introduce a Superman that takes advantage of the visual effects that we have at our disposal at this time.?

For the full story, pick up a copy of CINESCAPE magazine, on sale at newsstands now.<<<

hmmm, I was always under the impression that the new movie would be covering the death and rebirth of Superman, which is described in the post-crisis storyline of the comics.

It almost looks like this might be a carbon copy of Superman: The Movie, almost a remake.

It will definetly be interesting to see what they make Krypton look like and how that segment of the movie is handled.

Yes, this McG is just going to pull a "Joel Schumacker" on the Superman movies.

I guess the ones who are putting together this Supe's film haven't seen Charlie's Angels yet.

Personally, I would love it if no more Superman movies were ever made. For me, the definitive film-version of this clasic superhero is the very first: Superman: The Movie.

I don't want that talentless McG to ruin what has already been perfected by turning it into some CGI-laden 2 hour music video.

And by the way, Charlie's Angels sucked big time.

I don't see a reason to remake Superman. We know his origins. We know about Krypton, Smallville, Metropolis, everything.

I wish they would look at it from a one-shot comic perspective. Every so often, outside the regular timeline of a comic series, a writer and artist get together and make a great graphic novel story.

Why not just do that? Make a special story rather than rehash an origin that we already know?

Oh yes, the cod piece... I suppose if supergirl shows up, we'll be expected to see a shot of the molded ass-cheeks in her costume... [face_plain]

    Oh wait... she fights crime in a mini-skirt... I forgot... [face_plain] [face_plain]

Why do we need to see the origins of Superman again? It was done well enough in the Christopher Reeve version.
Why can't we start the movie at the height of his powers?
Stupid know nothing Hollywood execs about to destroy another franchise.

These comments piss me off. He makes Superman: The Movie sound like ancient history. Well, Mr. Mc "The Hack" G, the 20+ year-old effects of Superman: The Movie work a lot better than anything in your recent Charlie's Angels crapfest. And not only that, but the story, the directing and the acting (especially Reeve) were all top-notch. There is no need for *yet another* Superman origin story. That's why we have Smallville on TV.

*sigh* I'm glad Marvel doesn't have hacks like this guy ruining their projects.

I read in Tribute Magazine that Superman will be in the next Batman film too. It supposed to be called Batman VS Superman.

Hopefully Superman will be only in his own film though. It sounds better. :)

That's a very bad reason to make a movie, just so you can get the opportunity to use special effects. There is no reason to rehash Superman's origin again. You can only re-tell a story so many times. I fear McG is only interested in a Hollywood-watered-down Superman movie.

It would be sad if they rehashed the origin story. If he wanted to give a glimpse of Krypton using today's whiz-bang technology, he could always do it another way, such as with a kind of flashback, you know?

The repeated flashes to Batman's origin story in the first three Batman films was also annoying. OK, his parents were shot and he saw a bat. We got it the first time. A minor annoyance, really, but it was almost like they needed to revisit it an awful lot.

McG's alright. But as you all say, making it for the special FX is a bad idea.

Vaderbait, the last few Superman movies weren't that good but now with the resurgence of comic book adaptions, Superman has a chance to resurrect himself but instead we are given a rehash of a story that everybody surely must know by now and it's being made by a director who has no feeling for the character. His main goal by the sound of it is just to make an overblown SPX film with no substance.

Vaderbait, I agree on Superman III and IV that they weren't all that great. Especially IV.

But Superman II is top notch. Possibly even better than the original.

I did like Superman II, but it's not up to par with the first, but it is highly enjoyable.

Didn't Donner say that the studio gave him the opportunity to update the SFX for Superman for the DVD edition, and he turned them down because he liked how it turned out and didn't feel the need to tweak it to "perfection"?

Some of the FX were in fact tweeked. IN some slying composite shots, Superman's outfit looked green becuase of the needed bluescreen in those shots. In the DVD they have gone in changed the the color of the outfit back to its proper blue.

But mainly what they did was simply clean up the picture and gave the movie a new beautiful 5.1 digital mix which now sounds beautiful. They even gave various things some new and improved sound effects. In particular the credits woshing past the screen in the opening credit sequence now have a very loud and thunderous sound to them, its very awesome and very jarring at first on your surround system.

I only wish Superman II got the same DVD treatment. Hence its DVD is still stuck with crappy 2.0 sound that just comes across as flat and tin. Superman II as a movie, IMHO, is even better than the amazing original. But the sound sucks on the DVD and I wish they had a better sounding orchestra playing the score. That is my only complaint about Superman II.

I think Wormie's wrong. But it's a moot point, as Brett Ratner confirmed today he's directing SUPERMAN, not McG.

[apathy] Oh, another remake of Superman. Yay. [/apathy]

What do we have so far? The comic books, the TV series from the 60's, the Reeve movies (two of which were unbearable), and four spinoff TV series in recent years? I think Superman hit his apex in the 1978 movie. Much as I love the whole franchise, it must be getting as old and tired as the locomotive from the Grand Central Station sequence. (Word is it was in pretty rough shape when it was used for the movie.) If they're looking to make another Supe movie and doing so for the special effects, I'll be real disappointed, as I usually am with movies that are all about FX.

Not that I don't have faith, because the Spiderman movie was far out, even though that franchise has been around for a while. But I just can't shake the feeling that this new Supe project won't hold a candle to the '78 movie.

McG has got to keep John Williams' Superman theme for the next movie.

BRETT RATNER CONFIRMED FOR SUPERMAN!! - Updated!
    Saturday, September 14, 2002 11:03 CDT

    Hey Hypsters!

We just got a call from Latino Review who are in New York covering the "Red Dragon" junket. They specifically asked director Brett Ratner what his next project was and guess what, he CONFIRMED that he's doing Superman! Ratner said that J.J. Abrams delivered a "***cking Amazing" script...

Since Anthony Hopkins starred in "Red Dragon," he was also in attendance and they got a chance to ask him about yesterday's rumor that he was attached to play Superman's father Jor-El. Ratner said he definitely wants Hopkins to play the role, and Hopkins even did an impersonation of Marlon Brando!

They also overhead another conversation with Brett Ratner in which he debunked the rumor that Keanu Reeves was playing the Man of Steel. So, it looks like the Sky Movies report was right on - look for Brett Ratner directing, Anthony Hopkins starring as the dad, and possibly an unknown in the lead role.

Stay tuned, we'll have another update from the folks at Latino Review on this later today!

UPDATE: You can now read the interview with Brett Ratner and Anthony Hopkins at Latino Review!

Since this is a superman thread, I just thought I would let you guys know what I read on Superherohype.com. Basically it sounds like McG is out (oh joy!) and Brett Ratner is in.

I don't know how to make links but if you go to...
