    Hello there!

Well, I've never made a costume before so right now I'm really just looking for tips, suggestions, and/or comments from the masters here on this board. As my possible first costume, I want to make a New Jedi Order Jacen Solo costume, particularly the one on the Japanese cover of NJO: Force Heretic II: Reunion.

And here's another picture that is kinda similar, but shows more of the costume:

    http://images.wikia.com/starwars/images/1/11/Solokids.jpg

I've looked to see if it has been made already, but I could not really find anything. I don't really know where to start. I don't know how to sew (though I might be able to get help from my girlfriend or mom). At first I thought that it was just the same outfit Luke wore in ESB, but after closer inspection it really isn't like it at all. It looks more like a jumpsuit than a jacket and pants. It doesn't seem like it'd be an extremely difficult costume to make, but I've never made one before so I could be wrong. Plus I'm 17 and am going to be a Senior in high school and I have a job but not a ton of extra money.

Are there any patterns you'd suggest? Any other ideas, comments, suggestions, or tips?

Thank you all so much in advance!
    MTFBWY!

We need more Jacens out there! I have personally never seen this costume done.

For this costume, if you dont sew your best bet is to buy a flightsuit. They are not too expensive on the internet and some come in that color already. You may have to alter it a little, but it's easier than making a whole costume.
    I'd suggest something like this...
    http://shop.unclesamsdeals.com/Items/rc-7500-pa?

If you used the one above you would have to do a few minor alterations that any seamstress could do.

You can do a search for flightsuits and will get all kinds of stuff. You can also check out military surplus stores around where you live; they normally carry things like this that are cheaper, and you get to try them on.

If you want to MAKE the costume, I suggest this pattern=
    http://www.thegreenpepper.com/adults.html
    142 Black Butte Jumpsuit - Men $7.00

These patterns are very easy to use and very cheap. I would probably use some kind of twill for the fabric and when sewing the pattern, add pockets where they are in the reference picture, and dont add the extra pieces on the shoulders that go over the sleeves, as they are not in the reference picture.

Hope that helps! If you need anything you can pm me. I encourage you to learn how to sew if you want to get into costuming. I am learning finally and it is so much easier, not to mention cheaper, when you can do it yourself. You can tweak things to your liking.

Awesome. I have the exact thing in black. All I'd have to do is make gauntlets for the arms, which would be permanently attached. Gotta alter the arms anyway.

The fake Mandarin Collar on the jumpsuit is easily accomplished by folding the collar over, pressing it, and then whip-stitching it in place.

I'm looking to do a NJO version of my Thareen Penumbra character. My twist would be that I would have a brown with variegated olive fabric accent tabard-vest and obi over the jumpsuit.

This is what my prequel version of the character looks like:

The tabard-vest will be longer and swingier.

Yeah, with my RL app pending and my jedi costumes done, Jacen was gonna be my next personal project, though after finally playing through KOTOR, I think he'll have to wait until after I do Nihilus, and maybe Revan (if I have lots of time and money, lol)

I was actually planning on doing a Legacy of the Force Jacen, not NJO, though.

Thank you so much for the help so far.

larame_kaine: Thank you, that is most helpful so far! I like the idea of altering the flight jumpsuit because it should be easy to find a military flight suit because I live pretty close to a navy base. However, the pattern is pretty tempting because it seems like it would be most like the costume in the picture. I'll have to figure out which one will be best for me.

HardwareStoreJedi: That's a pretty cool idea, it'll be a cool costume to see when it's done.

HowardFilms: I would like to do a LotF Jacen eventually but there really isn't much reference material for the GAG outfits except for the costume Jacen is wearing on the cover of Betrayal. The Japanese covers for the NJO were amazing because of the glimpse they gave into the look of the NJO time period. I wonder if there'll be cool covers for the Japanese versions of the Legacy series. That would be nice.

Yeah, the new covers show a lot of...Ben, I think it is? Way too young to be Jacen, but I don't think I've even seen a picture of Ben skywalker before, so I have to assume.

I know Jacen was on the cover of Betrayal, I dont think Ben's been on a cover yet, though I expect he will soon. Look for a young teen with red hair. ^_^

Ben is actually going to be on the cover of Fury -- there's a thread with the image floating around in the Literature forum somewhere. ;)

And yay for Jacen costumes! There's definitely not enough of them. I would love to see pictures once both of yours are done. I have a Jacen website and the costuming section is fairly empty and in need of some costumers! ;D
