Over the weekend I went to New York and caught the New York Philharmonic Orchestra play the music of John Williams. The conductor was David Newman who is also an accomplished composer with scores such as Galaxy Quest, Matilda, Throw Momma From the Train, The Sandlot and a lot more. It was a beautiful performance that left you wanting more because Williams has so many terrific scores.

It started with the Olympic Theme, and there was a mix of the easily identifiable cues to ones Newman chose with the permission from Williams. Harry Potter's Main Theme, Hedwig's Theme, Superman's Theme, Marion's Theme, The Raider's March, Jurassic Park Theme and Catch Me if You Can. There were also a few some lesser known films. Lincoln, Minority Report, The Cowboys and A.I. with Newman's daughter Diana singing soprano. It was a nice blend of hits and Newman had several stories about Williams.

I was hoping the finale would be E.T. and I guessed right. They came back for an encore of The Imperial March and everyone cheered at the first few notes of recognition and I made sure to note smiles all over the audience and the performers. If you get a chance to hear John Williams performed by an orchestra don't pass it up. Can't recommend it enough!

The Cowboys is underrated. When it comes to sounding like a classic western theme, it's right up there with The Magnificent Seven, IMO.

Exactly what I was thinking when I heard it. Sounded a lot like Elmer Bernstein scores as well as other studio westerns.
