Did Obi Wan assume Anakin was killed in Order 66 before viewing the holo security transmission?

I imagine he believed Anakin to have survived both Order 66 and the temple raid--seems like he would have sensed Anakin's death via the force.

That was what Obi-wan had hoped, that he would've felt his friend and brother's death through the Force.

He probably thought Anakin was off with Padme somewhere and missed the whole thing.[face_dancing]

I think a lot of Jedi were dejected when the believed Anakin was killed at the Temple. Although the way Yoda clearly sensed Mace's death, you'd think Obi-Wan would have sensed Anakin's had he actually died.

I'd think that a Jedi as powerful as Anakin would be felt pretty clearly by someone so close, despite that the didn't have as much time as Yoda and Mace to form that bond.

I doubt Obiwan could sense Anakin better just because he was close to him. But I would bet Anakin's death would clearly be felt in the Force because he was powerful and the Chosen One. Yoda sensed Anakin's turn to the dark side on Kashyyyk, Obiwan did not. So Yoda was able to sense things better through the Force. I always believed that Obiwan thinking that Anakin died in the Temple was just him being wishful. He knew Anakin was alive and had a part in the events. I doubt he thought Anakin became a Sith Lord, but that something terrible had happened, and Anakin was involved. In the RotS novel, Obiwan and Yoda see that the youngling bodies were killed by someone using a lightsaber, and Obiwan asks, "Who could have done this?" And Yoda just shakes his head and says "Already know that, you do".

I don't think he even thought about it at first. He had more pressing matters, like surviving, finding out what was going on and how he could stop it. If he thought about it at all, he could simply reassure himself w/ the prophecy. If Anakin was the chosen one he couldn't die until he brought balance to the force. That is until Yoda points out that the younglings were killed w/ a lightsaber. At that point I think he has a sneaking suspicion that things weren't right with Anakin. The council has had these suspicions of Anakin for a while now. He knew that Anakin was troubled and that Padme and Anakin had deep feelings for each other (so he knows even more than the council but chooses not to see them). He's the one that says he must watch the security holograms to know for sure. Up until he saw the holograms, he was in denial.

While Obi Wan was being attacked, I think he just thought that the clones had made a mistake in aiming. Not until he contacts Bail does he learn that the temple was destroyed and raided. Deep down, I think Obi Wan had a sense that Anakin had something to do with it, I believe he would've sensed his death because he was so strong and fluent in the force. Yoda knew Anakin was part of initiating order 66 because he clearly says 'only pain you will find' leading us to believe Yoda knew all along and didn't want Obi Wan seeing it with his own eyes.

Obi Wan replies 'I must know' indicating he might have had his own thoughts, needing to see it with his own eyes to believe it. Of course, right after he says he can't believe it but I think deep down they always suspected if the jedi were going to ever be destroyed only Anakin was powerful enough to do it. There was always the thought that Obi Wan believed Anakin to be better than that, knowing that Anakin if staying true to the jedi, would die defending it for the cause of the jedi and the Republic.

I thought the ROTS book said that Obi-Wan thought Anakin had died defending the Temple. However, I don't have the book in front of me right now.

There's no evidence that Obi-Wan sensed the death of any Jedi, so I don't think he would have necessarily expected to sense Anakin's death if he had been killed. Years later he did sense the destruction of an entire planet, but that was millions of people dying at once, and it could also be argued that his years spent in isolation on Tatooine allowed him to become more attuned to the Force.

Perhaps he thought this immediately after the initial attack, but it's clear later that he knows something is wrong as he hides from the probe droid, surreptitiously listens in on the clones' conservation, and when he contacts Bail Organa, he says, "My clones turned on me."

Yoda had become more in tune with the Living Force, in recent years. He could sense things more accutely than Obi-wan would've. So that is why we see Yoda react to Mace's death, Anakin's conversion and Order 66. Obi-wan was connected to the Living Force, but not to the same degree. Only with time and training, does he become focused enough that he could sense Aldereaan's destruction. Luke was just beginning his training in the Living Force, which is why he didn't sense it. Later on, he would've felt such a disturbence in the Force. Yoda also sensed Alderaan's destruction and Obi-wan becoming one with the Force.

He thought that Anakin was too weak to survive.

    I do not blame him.

No, he didn't think Anakin was too weak to survive. He thought that he fought to the bitter end and was eventually overwhelmed by sheer numbers. As any Jedi worth his/her weight would in that situation.

Being on his way to Alderann might have someone allowed him to feel that as his thoughts and feelings were already directed to Alderann. If there hadn't been a death star and he got Luke and the Droids to Alderann I think he would have told Luke the truth much earlier or at least have told him that Leia was his sister.

I thought Yoda was reacting to Anakin's turn instead of Mace's death.

I always interpreted it to being Yoda sensed both of that occuring. He sensed Mace dying and Anakin's turn to the Dark Side.

As for Obi-Wan, well, I think he probably was hoping that Anakin survived the attack on the Jedi Temple, but was probably expecting to walk up to Anakin's body. It was only when he discovered with Yoda that some of the kids were kill by a lightsaber instead of clones, then Obi-Wan had a suspicion that something was amist.

Then the recording of the massacre spelled it all out for him.

Poor Obi-Wan, and just when things were looking good! (Grevious and Dooku dead, the end of the war was near and all.) :_|

Yoda reacts to Anakin turning to the dark side. It is that violent shift in the balance of the force that nearly brings him to his knees.

And Obi-Wan's connection to Anakin was strong. He knew full well that Anakin was alive. What he didn't know, and could never have predicted, is what Anakin did in order to remain alive.

I doubt that Obi-wan is aware that Anakin is still alive because he wasn't that attuned to the Force as Yoda and with all the chaos of Order 66 happening throughout the galaxy, Obi-wan believed that Anakin has died along with the other Jedi.

I believe that Obi-Wan suspected the Emperor's influence over Anakin was responsible for the death of many Jedi, but he did not want to believe it. He was holding out hope that somehhow Anakin was not responsible for it. The tape just gave him the evidence he could not refute.

Also as far as Yoda dropping the cane, now mind you I haven't read the book, but I always interpeted as Yoda's reaction to the death of the Jedi across the galaxy, and not the singular death of Mace.

I agree. I always thought Yoda dropping the cane and holding his head was because he was sensing the death of all the jedi throughout the galaxy. Just like Obi Wan and alderaan ''feeling the thousands of voice all yell and be silenced at once.''

Yoda's feeling all his comrads die through the force and he's trying to comprehend how it's happening and the force of all the death mixed with the sudden urge of the darkside is just overwhelming him...

In the Matt Stover novel of Revenge of the Sith it states that Obi Wan aboard the Tantive IV assumes that Anakin must of fallen in defense of the temple after Bail informs him of what he witnessed there. Yoda on the other hand felt a great disturbance upon the Force on Kayshkk with the Death of Mace and all the others, but the cloud of Darkness must of strengthened only more for I believe that it isn't until they reach the temple that Yoda is truly convinced that Anakin fell to the Darkside as he so points out to Obi Wan when he goes to the secruity holo's.

Yoda was able to feel Anakin's pain and emotions during AOTC when Anakin was on Tatooine and i believe Yoda must of felt them once again to a degree, but with Sidious no longer hiding under any facade at least not Force wise Yoda was not able to acknowledge for sure if Anakin had fallen until they reached the temple.

Another theory I have is even up until the duel on Mustafar Obi Wan doesn't believe Anakin has completely turned until he Force Chokes Padme. While he knows Anakins shortcomings Obi Wan still believes in the goodness that was once Anakin, but after the choke knows that Anakin will no longer stop at anything in his quest for greater power.

Yoda reacts twice. First to the death of the Posse and Anakin's turn. Then again when Order 66 is being carried out.
