    I don't get this:

Obi-Wan and Anakin parted ways as Obi-Wan left for Utapau. That night, Anakin has a second dream about Padme's death. The next day, Anakin is in Padme's apartment and he asks if Obi-Wan had been there. Padme says Obi-Wan had gone by that morning. But how could he if he had already left for Utapau?

I always thought that it was a daydream triggered by his sensing Obi-Wan's presence that he snapped out of as Padme entered the room.

Which is why he was holding that viewer thing absently.

Ulicus is right. No one said Anakin had to be sleeping to have those visions. Something that terrible can haunt you every time you close your eyes for just a second. It?s something that?s burnt into Anakin?s memory.

Here's where the visit fitted into the shooting script...

    -Galaxies opera/Darth Plagueis
-Yoda observes the battlefield on Kashyyyk
    -Obi visits Padmé (deleted)
-Second "Rebellion" meeting, in Padmé's appartment (deleted)
    -Obi leaves for Utapau
-Palpatine's shuttle arrives in the Senate and is welcomed by Ani (deleted)
-Palpatine discusses Obi's unsuitability for the Utapau mission with Ani and suggests that he is under the unfluence of a "certain female senator" (deleted)
    -Padmé's appartment: Ani's second vision of Padmé's death/questioning Padmé about Obi's visit

As the scene was originally written, it was much clearer that Ani had begun to become jealous of Obi-Wan because Palpatine had been planting seeds.
That was mainly why Obi had crept into Ani's vision and why he asked if he had been to visit Padmé.
When that plot strand was toned down - Ani's suspicion of betrayal by Obi - and the Palpatine scenes were dropped, it now works that Ani simply senses Obi's presence in the appartment and has the vision of Padmé's death.
Lucas even explained on the commentary how Anakin's hand was later moved digitally to make it clear he was not looking at the screen and the "dream" was actually now happening in the appartment.

I see what you all are saying, I guess he could have been thinking about the original dream. But thing is, Obi-Wan wasn't in the original dream. I haven't seen any other indication that the second dream was a daydream.

    See my edit above.
The scene was originally written to be just another "dream".
Obi had crept into Ani's thoughts because of Palpatine's manipulations.
In the final cut of the movie, Ani just senses Obi's presence and the daydream occurs in the apparment, and the scene was subtly altered to make this clearer... as explained by Lucas on the DVD commentary.

I thought Anakin had a 'vision' of the future.

Does he really need to lie down and take a nap to have one of those?

That's odd... since Padme said "He came by this morning"...

Well, Padme states he came by this morning. It happened but we just don't see it. She's referring to the deleted scene. That's all. She basically explains to Anakin what Obi-Wan came by for. He was worried about Anakin the deleted scene. But, there was more to it too.

    Why's it odd?

    94 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME'S APARTMENT-LIVING ROOM-EARLY MORNING
    95 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME'S APARTMENT-DAY
    96 EXT. CORUSCANT-CLONE LANDING PLATFORM-DAY
    97 EXT. CORUSCANT-CLONE LANDING PLATFORM-DAY
    98 INT. REPUBLIC BATTLE CRUISER-HANGAR-SPACE
    99 EXT. JEDI FIGHTER-SPACE
    100 EXT. CORUSCANT-CITYSCAPE-CHANCELLOR'S TRANSPORT-DAY
    101 INT. CORUSCANT-SENATE OFFICE BUILDING-MAIN HALLWAY-DAY
    102 INT. POLIS MASSA-MEDICAL CENTER-DREAM
    103 INT. CORUSCANT-PADME'S APARTMENT-LANDING ROOM-DAY
    104 EXT. UTAPAU-SPACE

According to the script it all takes place in the same day.

Also, the events of RotS took place over a span of several weeks...possibly months. We, as an audience, have a cramped perspective on time in the film. Not everything in RotS took place within 2 hours 18 minutes. (I know that's not what you're suggesting with this thread)

    :)

Thanks for that, GiG. You got it right.

I still wish we could've seen that Padme and Obi-Wan conversation in the deleted scenes.

Well, in an Insider Q and A, Pablo states that the events in Episode III takes place over 9 days actually.

The way I took it was, the presence of Obi Wan triggered the dream. And as soon as the dream broke, Ani asked about Obi Wan.

    And it was that simple.

I wonder where I got the impression that it took place over a number of weeks. Of course, I hardly believe that PH's commentary is canon.

Very true, but I just happen to read one of the recent Insider Magazine and there was a specific question about it. He says 9 days but that's technically his opinion. It's not truly official.

Hmm, I must admit, I always got the impression it was a matter of days rather than weeks or months...

Well, you're probably right. I had the impression it took place over a longer period of time instead of a compressed week. But hey, it still takes place over a long period of time...9 days ain't short...and there was plenty of time for Obi-Wan to visit Padme at her apartment.

    *knowing smile*

Ahhhh (it was a trap! :p) but you argued against it being a daydream and said that it was:

Was Anakin really napping in the middle of the day? Unlikely.

    Thus, it was a daydream/vision.

EDIT: Wait, no you didn't argue that... I was mistaken. D'oh. I thought you were arguing that it was just a dream.

Yeah. Anakin could be doing work in the Temple and Obi-Wan sunk out to see Padme before he met Anakin to leave for Utapau. Plenty of time.

No, you're right - I didn't really make myself that clear.

All I was saying was that, as it was originally scripted, there was a dream sequence which seagued into Padmé and Ani in the appartment.
Originally this vision was in part inspired by Palpatine's words about Obi.
So it was not necessarily taking place in the appartment, it was just on Ani's mind while he was in the appartment.
Lucas specifically altered the scene, making Ani appear in deep thought, to clue us in to the fact that Ani had sensed Obi and that had triggered the vision/dream thing.

I figured he was just sitting there, remembering the dream, like a flashback. That's why he seemed so out of it, like he couldn't pay attention to anything, like that thing he's holding in his hands.

They said in the commentary that they made it look like he was out of it, by having him point the object downward, then look at it, and set it on the couch. Instead of, look at it, put it down, set it on the couch.

Anakin sensed Obi-wan had been there. Besides, it was a day dream; there was no night before it.
