Obi-Wan Kenobi, Master or Knight?

If I understand the Jedi tradition right, when a Knight trains somebody else from Padawan to Knighthood, he becomes a Master. The Late Master Qui-Gon trained Kenobi, and Darth Tryannus to boot. So, how about Obi-Wan? At the end of RotJ, Luke is unagruably a Jedi. But, at least in my opinion, so is Anakin Skywalker (saving his son and killing the last Sith lord has to count for something. Obi-Wan was granted knighthood after killing a Sith Apperentice). So, even though he's dead and his few remains (brown robe, lightsaber) are subatomic particles at Yavin, does he now count as a Jedi Master, or is he eternally stuck to be "just" a Jedi Knight?

 

Obi-Wan is referred to as "Master" Kenobi in Episode II.

 

Yes, but Obi-Wan was only a Jedi Knight in Attack of the Clones. He is referred to a "Master" as a sign of respect.

The Official Site (I think maybe Pablo from Hyperspace) confirmed that Obi-Wan is a Jedi Master in Revenge of the Sith.

So, Obi-Wan truly is a Master in the Original Trilogy

OK, but when is Darth Vader/Anakin Skywalker ever a Jedi???

 

Probably Episode 3 since the book about him taking his trial will come out soon.

Jedi Master. I don't know why, but this disappoints me..I always thought of Obi-Wan as a Knight for some reason.

Obi-Wan Kenobi is a Jedi Master, there is no doubt.

This may be wrong but I have read that on the first death star he could have almost killed Vader but instead he sacrificed himself so that Luke could fufill his destiny. Though that duel was my least favorite if Obi-Wan almost beat DARTH VADER he certainly qualifies as a Jedi Master. If my readings were wrong than I'm sure that Obi-Wan died so that Luke and co. could escape but I am confident in what I first stated.

 

Ben was only a Jedi Knight up until the PT in the 1990's when Lucas decided that Ben would be a Jedi Master in Episode III.

If Anakin Skywalker was a Jedi Knight as Obi-Wan told Luke, and if he (Skywalker) is a Jedi Knight at some point in the PT, then Obi-Wan is then a Jedi Master since Skywalker was once his padawan.

 

Obi-Wan is a Jedi Master and a member of the Jedi Council in E3.

Anakin is a Jedi Knight in E3.

 

At the risk of sounding "newbie-ish"... when a Jedi is a Jedi master that's when they're training someone.
And when they're a Knight that's when they've passed all the trials and are about to set off on their own.
I'm a still a "newbie" to the JC but I'm not a "newbie" to Star Wars.
Maybe I should read the other posts in this thread before I hit the Post button. Nah.... it's cool.

I think it works like this:

Jedi Knights have three levels or ranks:

Padawans
Knights
Masters

But they are all considered generically "Jedi Knights."

Anyone with a Padawan apprentice, regardless of whether they hold the rank of Knight or Master, is referred to as "Master" since they are instructing a student.

Yeah, up until about a year ago, it was supposed to be that Obi-wan never became a Jedi Master. Like some other story threads, Lucas changed his mind.
