In one of the released tv spots or the trailer (I forget)....during the duel, Obi-Wan yells/pleads with Anivader "You Were the chosen one"....[past tense] Is this to suggest that after Anakins turn to the dark side the Force pulls its stock in Anakin as the chosen one and passes it to Luke. It can be said that in the end Luke does bring the force back into balance, even if it is through his motivating Vader to off the emporer. I probably am barking up the wrong tree, but it could also be an unexpected twist.

I think it means Anakin could have been the chosen one, but he condemned himself basically. That's how I intrepreted it.

Obi-Wan just believes that there is no hope for Anakin... and therefore the prophecy cannot be fulfilled.

Anakin is still the chosen one, not Luke.

    Edit: ^^^Exactly
Obi-Wan has lost faith in Anakin. Anakin will still fulfill his destiny, but not the way everyone believed.

Obi-Wan no longer believes that Anakin is the chosen one after he turns to the dark side. He believes the prophecy can no longer be fulfilled.

I'm going to try to nip this in the bud right now. George Lucas has said many, many times that Anakin is the chosen one. End of story.

also, don't forget, he didn't expect palps to rebuild anakin. he might believe anakin will die, leading him to believe the prophecy will not be fulfilled.

I would have loved to see his reaction when he found out he was alive.

There is only one Chosen one and it's Anakin. When Obi-Wan yell's "You were the Chosen One!" he's basically telling Anakin that he's lost all hope for him. Luke helps Anakin restore balance, but he's not the Chosen one, Anakin is.

    That is exactly it.

in the rots book, someone (maybe mace windu) makes a good point:

"anakin is the one who will bring balence to the force, but we don't even know what 'bring balence to the force' means."

so they dont even understand the prophecy. plus, if the force needs to be put into balence, that implies it is OUT of balence (too much "light"?)and the rise of the sith again (increase in "dark") balences it out. OR, you could say anakin DID make things better in the force, since he is technically the one who killed palatine.

I was thinking that Obi-Wan was sure Anakin was a dead man, therefore couldn't fulfill the prophecy and this would leave the Force in darkness forever. You have to look at everything Obi-Wan says to really get a good idea what he might mean.

Well, after reading the script, the full line went something like "You were the chosen one! You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them!" or something along those lines. So basically, by joining the Sith, Anakin defied his chances at being the chosen one.

Past tense. Can't be the Chosen one now, because he is DEAD! Obi-wan just cut off his legs and hand and Anakin is now a bundle of flesh on the bbq. Past tense.

Well considering he's bursting in flames, and slowly sliding into a river of lava, I'm betting Obi-Wan thinks Anakin is going to die. I would.
CYPHER: How can he be the [Chosen] One, is he's dead?

I think Obi was just showing his disappointment about the things Ani did. You were the chosen one, how could you do what you did.

The whole scene goes like this in the screenplay:"You were the Chosen One! You were supposed to destroy the Sith, not join them! You were like a brother to me, I loved you but now I cannot save you."

Now, I don't think Obi-Wan thought that Anakin was going to die but he did know that Anakin has sided with the Sith, making it impossible (In Obi-Wan's mind) for Anakin to bring balance and live up to the prophecy.

but he says that as anakin falls onto the hot sand, so at the moment he says that, he also pretty much knows its inevitable that he will die (or so he thinks)

Balance is subjective...who can tell if balance is the triumph of the light side? Maybe the prophecy was announcing the rise of the sith, only to be defeated 20 years later by Luke...

The prophecy was wrong. Luke and Anakin are the Chosen Two.

Not according to Lucas. The Sith are a nuisance to balance, and Anakin was meant to get rid of them.

    EDIT: Above BlutEngel.

Remember, Obi-Wan leaves in a hurry after he sees Palpatine shuttle approaching. He knows that they are there to get Anakin and that he'll be safe.

DOes ObiWan think he killed Anakin? He knows Vader is ANakin, does he see him survive?

I think that Obi-Wan is wrong, and that Anikin is still the chosen one. He was supposed to bring BALANCE, not an end to the dark side. I view the force as more of a ying-yang thing. There's supposed to be an equal amount of both sides, and these sides battle each other to keep themselves in balance. The Sith were obviously outnumbered by the Jedi, but Anikin brought a balance to it. He was the chosen one, and did fulfill the prophecy, it just wasn't the way the masters thought it would be fulfilled.

I think I'll side with Jedi-Queen on this matter. The switch from present tense to past tense might not be as sinifigent as some may think.
