Do you think that when ob1 smiled to luke and vader he was thinking "that´s your son". Did anyone back in 1977 felt something weird about that smile. i always connected that smile to the fact that vader was Luke´s father.

No, I have always seen it as "Ha! I'm going to do the disappearing trick that you don't know about!"

He felt better, knowing their last hope would get away from Vader.

I always thought it was one of those smiles of just giving into destiny. Luke was escaping, Obi Wan was fulfilling his destiny, he was just happy.

Ive always thought that Obi Wan's smile is a nod to two things:

    1. The fact that when Luke see's what happens to him it will cement his desire to become a Jedi, and to rid the galaxy of Darth Vader and the Empire.
    2. Obi Wan ALSO knows that he can still help after he is struck down.

Its a combination of those two things that Obi Wan knows and Vader is oblivious to.

Before the PT I thought of it as a reassuring smile to luke...after the PT the smile means more of a "glad to be back in action."

I think Obi-wan was just happy that Luke would be able to escape therefore serving his purpose in that stage of bringing down the empire. Also maybe it was his final step in becoming "immortal" as Yoda explained in the end of ROTS. In his "ghost" form he would forever be able to help guide Luke in his training from there on.

I stick to my opinion because Ob1 doesn´t look only to Luke but also to his former padawan , with a a look of forgiving and hope in him , not only un his son , because if Anakin didn´t want to return to the light , he wouldn´t.

I always took it as Obi-Wan WANTING Luke to see Vader kill him. Obi-Wan knew Luke had to face Vader and thought that maybe he'd face him to seek revenge for killing Obi-Wan.

There are several possible reasons for that great smile.
Here are a few of the possibilities.

-Maybe he is smiling because he knows that even though he is killed by vader, the fate of the Empire is already sealed with the escape of Luke.

    -Once again you loose Vader

-I've always felt that Kenobis smile is telling us he knows more than Vader ever will.

Ob1 says himself that he will be more powerful than you could ever imagine and I think knowing that is what made him smile. Darth couldn't win with him as a youth and still can't really destroy him now...that was always my opinion.

I`ve alway seen that smile as one of the AMAZINGLY perfect things about this film, along the same lines as Obi`s shifty look when Luke asks him about his father - honestly, these bits couldn`t have been done any better!

Obi-Wan's smile is a realization that the "new hope" has come into play, and that he was about to fulfill his teachings and become one with the Force.

And for the record, like ousley, I do not approve of the abbreviation "OB1".

Before we found out about Vader being Luke's and Leia's father, I always took it to be that he knew Vader couldn't destroy him - as he had stated during the duel. He also knew he could better help Luke without having to be concerned about any danger to himself ever again. After discovering Vader's and Leia's true heritage,it stillmeans the former, yes, but also he sees that Luke and Leia were INDEED together and I'm sure could feel the instant bond they already did and he knew "it was time" for all things to come together. luke and Leia together, with their inherited abilities from both Anakin and Padme - would be a VERY strong power source, and Yoda still alive and able to train, he knew it was all a MAJOR sign from the Force that all would now be set right soon enough.

I think obi smile because seeing him get "killed" by vadar that this prompt Luke to seek vadar out and then the truth would come out. Or also obi-wan's smile meant that maybe Luke would be able to bring back anakin from the depths of hell called Lord vadar to the light side of the force :)
