Title: Anywhere in the Galaxy

Genre: Romance; Fluff; Mush.

Characters: Avar Kriss; Elzar Mann.

Event: 110 Word Hurdle.

Summary: Avar and Elzar by the Mon Cala ocean.

Anywhere in the Galaxy (110 Word Hurdle)

“Where would you be if you could be anywhere in the galaxy?” she asked, her voice blending into the rhythm--the give and take--of the waves crashing against the dock, one of many belonging to the Jedi Temple built over the ocean on Mon Cala, where they lay side by side, fingers floating in sunset-stained water.

“Right here.” His smile was warm as a sunbeam.

“Because you’re by the ocean.” She laughed at how utterly predictable he was.

“No.” He nuzzled against her neck, and she felt a hot flush rising in her cheeks. “Because you’re here with me. There’s no place in the galaxy I’d rather be than by your side.”

I've really fallen in love with the High Republic era and it is a real pleasure to right in the era, and I always appreciate it so much when people take a chance on my High Republic stories even if they aren't familiar with the era! Summary: When he is with Avar, Elzar feels alone in the universe.

Alone in the Universe (100 Word Sprint)

“When I’m with you,” Elzar murmured in Avar’s ear as he twirled her around the crowded dance floor of a political reception he didn’t care about, very conscious of his palms pressed to her waist. Guiding her though he felt clumsy and clod-footed. Not nearly as graceful as her. “It’s like we’re alone in the universe. Everyone else falls away into nothingness.”

“How lonely for you.” Avar’s forehead furrowed, and he knew the dance, the universe, wasn’t like that for her.

“Not lonely.” Elzar shook his head, aching to kiss her. “I can’t be lonely with you as my companion.”

Title: A Thousand More Years

Genre: Drama; Hurt/Comfort; Angst.

Event: 200 Freestyle.

Summary: Avar wishes the golden age of the Republic could last for a thousand more years.

A Thousand More Years (200 Freestyle)

“Do you remember how we’d wish on the first star we saw at night and believe it would come true when we were growing up at the Temple on Coruscant?” Avar bit her lip as she stood next to Elzar, staring out a viewport at Starlight Beacon into the black void of space only rarely interrupted by yellow pinpricks signifying light and life. The two things Jedi were sworn to protect above all.

“An urban legend.” Elzar’s lips twitched in an echo of hers.

“If I could make any wish and have it come true right now, it’d be for this”--Avar gestured at the Starlight Beacon, one of Chancellor Soh’s Great Works-- “and all it symbolizes to last for a hundred more years. A thousand more years.”

“It will,” Elzar assured her although it was hard to believe that with the threat of the Nihil and the Drengir.

“What if it doesn’t?” Avar turned worried eyes on him, and Elzar despaired at the times that had shaken the faith of even the eternally staunch and unflinching Avar Kriss. “What will future Jedi say about us if we fail? If we’re the generation that fails to hold back the dark?”

 

@WarmNyota_SweetAyesha As always, thank you so much for reading and commenting on my High Republic stuff!I'm so glad that you found it in character for Avar to have these worries and trepidations since I think there is so much weight of responsibility on her that it would be natural for her to have her doubts and fears. I really wanted to put Elzar in a position where he is comforting and reassuring her despite his ominous visions as a way of showing how much he loves her since I think sometimes love is shown most deeply when we try to overcome our own fears to reassure and comfort someone else.

Title: The Life Expectancies of Wookies

Summary: Avar and Elzar discuss the life expectancies of Wookies at the Jedi outpost on Kashyyyk.

The Life Expectancies of Wookies (400 Word Cross Country)

“Do you think female Wookies outlive male ones?” Elzar asked Avar as they sat side-by-side on a swinging seat hung from the wooden rafters of the porch of the Jedi outpost on Kashyyyk.

An outpost designed to honor the natural landscape. To be absorbed into its beauty rather than conquer it. A treehouse carved from one of a thousand wroshyr trees in a forest full of them. A forest where the Wookies had built a city of tree homes and businesses connected by rope pathways over chasms so deep Avar couldn’t see the ground below when she walked.

“It doesn’t matter what I think.” Avar pulled up a Holonet browser on the datapad she was using to compose a report for the Jedi Council. Navigating to a search engine, she typed in a quick query and found an encyclopedia article on the Wookie species. She scrolled down to the section detailing the Wookie life expectancy. “It matters what the stats say. The stats here say the life expectancy of the average Wookie female is twenty-five years greater than that of the average Wookie male.”

“Twenty-five years.” Elzar whistled, staring out at the light dappling through the green forest leaves. “That’s a long time.”

“Time and longevity are relative.” Avar stroked the trunk of the great wroshyr tree that was the sturdy base of the Jedi outpost. A tree and trunk that had stood for a thousand years and might endure for a thousand more before finally falling to rot on the forest floor. “Twenty-five years would be nothing to this wroshyr tree. As for Wookies, they live longer than we humans do. Twenty-five more years would be comparable to the average six years that human women outlive men.”

“It does raise the question of why women across species outlive men.” Elzar rubbed at his chin contemplatively.

“An easy question to answer.” Avar nudged him. “Across species, males are more violent and impulsive. Violence and recklessness kills. It is the way of the Force.”

“I’m more impulsive than you.” Elzar mused, eyes dark as the forest shadows where the sunlight never shone. “Perhaps I will die before you.”

“I will mourn you if you do.” She longed to cup his cheek between her palms but contented herself with leaning against his warm body. “But let’s not talk about death on such a beautiful day with light and life all around us.”

I do find it interesting how women outlive men, so I couldn't resist giving the topic some exploration here. The wonderful thing is that in some articles I've read on why women outlive men is that men are more likely to suffer violent deaths or ones caused by reckless behavior and accidents. And somehow that felt especially appropriate with Wookies. So I couldn't resist including that as inspiration for this nice, serene moment shared by Avar and Elzar.

Summary: The nature and evolution of Elzar and Avar's love.

Fathomless Love (4x100 Relay)

Deepest Affection

“Neither of us have a Padawan,” Avar remarked.

“Indisputable.” Elzar wondered why Avar had brought up such an obvious truth. “Stellan does, however, andVern is more than enough Padawan for any three Knights.”

“She’s not that bad.” Avar elbowed him. “Not nearly as bad as you in your youth.”

“As bad as I still am.” Elzar smirked. Then asked, “Why lament our lack of Padawans?”

“Because they say the Master and apprentice bond is the deepest affection a Jedi will ever know.” Avar’s tone was wistful.

“Anyone who says that hasn’t known my affection for you.” Elzar squeezed her shoulder.

Ocean of Intimacy

There was a radiant ocean of light inside Avar, and only Elzar ever became so intimate with her as to dive into it. Soak in its otherwise unplumbed depths. Drank in its brine until he drowned in the taste of salt abrasive and exhilarating on his lips and his tongue. Rocked in the unceasing waves of their euphoric love.

Nobody else penetrated that deeply into her. Everyone else only skimmed the surface of her ocean of light the way Elzar’s fingers traced the outline of her luminous flesh, her beautiful body, as it pounded like a broken heart beneath him.

Forever Friends

Avar and Elzar were friends before they were lovers and after too. It made their intimacy paradoxically both easier and harder. More comfortable and more painful. A balance of light and dark elements in the Force. Of wading shallows and suffocating depths.

Long ago, when they were younglings studying in the Coruscant Temple, they had sworn they would be forever friends. They kept that promise. It, along with their ever-growing friendship became the solid backbone of their love. Their love was tempered by their friendship. Transformed into something strong and enduring because of it. Something that could survive any separation.

Depths of Charity

Charity was like love in that it had depths that could not be fathomed. Could not be easily understood without much careful probing. Charity was like love in that it could not be clearly explained in words to an inquisitive outsider or a demanding insider, for that matter. Charity was like love in that it was selfless and self-sacrificing.

Perhaps, like his first Jedi teachers had told Elzar, charity was love. Love in its purest, unfiltered, and unadulterated form. The ultimate manifestation of love without envy. Without greed. Without lies. Without illusion. Without pettiness. The truth and spirit of love.
