How many different lightsaber colors and what do they all mean? Here's what I know:

    red: Sith
green: for older Jedi (from what I can tell)
blue: younger Jedi (again from what I can tell)
purple: Mace's since he taps into the dark side with his moves (a combo of blue AND red)
orange: some say they saw one in AOTC

Also, does anyone but Mace have a purple lightsaber? I saw a girl on the cover of a Star Wars book have one which confused me.

The Sith use red sabers, yes. But as for the Jedi, they mainly use blue and green, but there is no, and I repeat no meaning behind the colors. Not in their world anyway, there might be a meaning from the authors & GL giving certain people colors, but yeah.

Blue and green are just more common. *shrugs* Purple is just rare.

edit: The woman you saw was way more than likely, Mara Jade. The Emperor's Hand (asassin basically) destined to become Luke Skywalker's wife.

She had a purple lightsaber? The girl I saw was on the new Legacy of the Jedi books so I don't know if it's her.

    That was probably Jaina Solo...

    Yep, definitely Jaina Solo. :)

Ah, Legacy of the Jedi, not Legacy of the Force. Not Jaina Solo, then. :p

The cover of Jude Watson's Legacy of the Jedi book doesn't have anyone with a purple lightsaber on it, though-- heck, it doesn't have a girl on it either... :p

EDIT: Aha, now I know what you're talking about! Finally! :p

You're talking about the sequel to Legacy of the Jedi, entitled Secrets of the Jedi. The girl next to Padme on the cover with the purple lightsaber is Siri Tachi, a childhood friend (and somewhat a love interest) of Obi-Wan Kenobi. :)

ah, thank you for telling me who it is. I knew it couldn't be Jaina or Mara Jade. Why does Siri have a purple lightsaber, or Jaina for that matter. And what happened to the yellow lightsabers? Also, are there any orange ones?

Originally, all Jedi lightsabers were going to be blue, and all Sith ones were red. That changed in ROTJ when Luke had to fight on Tatooine, which had blue sky. In early tests, it was found that blue lightsaber against blue sky didn't work, so they switched it to green. His blue saber can be seen in the "Revenge of the Jedi" teaser in the OT DVD bonus disc, and also on the theatrical poster. In TPM, Qui-Gon also had to fight on Tatooine, with a blue sky backdrop. It was decided that he would have a green lightsaber as well. If Qui-Gon's fight on Tatooine had been during the night, or not at all, he would most likely have a green one as well, with Luke being the only Jedi having a green lightsaber (it's possible Mace would still have a purple one, though).

The Expanded Universe, well, expanded on the lightsabers, as before TPM no one knew that Jedi only used blue and green (except Mace). Pre AOTC Jedi used many other colors besides blue or green.

My explanation for the sudden lack of multicolored sabers is that before the Clone War, many Jedi used the lightsabers that were most important to them. Usually, these were ones they had built during their training and used many exotic crystals resulting in a variety of colors. When the Clone War began, starting with the battle of Geonosis, the chance of losing their most prized lightsabers increased, so the Jedi decided to switch to the more easily replaceable and acessable blue and green crystals found on Ilum. This also accounts for the appearance of less than half a dozen different lightsaber designs. Mace Windu decided to keep his "special" lightsaber, as he felt sure enough in his skills that he would never lose it.

Wow, why aren't there different colors of lightsabers in the books/comics that come before AOTC then?

There are. Many Jedi had different colored sabers.

    Here's just a few examples:

Revan: Purple (in a vision on Korriban at least)

    Plo Koon: Yellow

    Ki-Adi-Mundi: Purple

    Saesee Tiin: Purple

    Adi Gallia: Red

    Siri Tachi: Purple

    Yun: Yellow

    Gorc and Pic: Orange

    Corran Horn: Silver

    Lowbacca: Bronze

Basically, any saber color you can use in KOTOR II has been used by someone at one point in SW history.

It does look pink on there, but I think it's "officially" violet. Either way, it's not blue or green.

hmm, it DOES look purptle/violet there. in the bookstore it looked more pink, to me. Which i think would have worked best, in my personal opinion. I think it would b so cute for a girl Jedi to have a pink lightsaber. i think girls that like pink are SO cute ^^

The colors of a lightsaber have nothing to do with the Jedi...

Also, I don't think Sasaee Tinn and Ki-Adi Mundi have purple lightsabers...actually, they don't. I don't know where you got that from.

I think the only source for Saesee's saber is his first action figure, but Ki-Adi used a purple saber in Galactic Battlegrounds for the PC.

I had heard that the sith took all the red crystals away from the caves and the on;y colors left were blue and green. Mace may have found a red one and combined it with a blue one to get purple. This would reflect his fighting style.

Aren't the location from which the Lightsabers are retrieved what decides the color. Ilum produces blue and green whereas Dantooine produces many different colors. I remember hearing this somewhere.

EDIT: Grammar makes me look like a 'tard.

I didn't know there were crystals on Dantooine. Where's you hear this?

There are crystals on Dantooine in the KOTOR games.

Ilum has mainly blue and green crystals, other ones have to be obtained from other places, and are sometimes a combination of more than one.

Mace had a purple crystal, no combo.

Sith use synthetic red crystals that are in tune with the Dark Side. Luke also made his crystal in a furnace.

I can't remember offhand, but I'm sure it says in the book Lightsabers in the Young Jedi Knights series.

I know its highly unlikely, but WAS there an orange saber in AOTC somwhere? I would guess that if it is, its shown somewhere in the arena battle scene. I really doubt it though. Does anyone know definatively?
