Seriously, and I was wondering how the film could be updated.

How can we update the dad who is only focused on his bank job and ignores the kids? Perhaps they should redo it with Mary working for Social Services and the dad being an alcoholic druggie wife-beater, and she could teach him the error of his ways, before he seduces her and they run off into the sunset.

The dad could be Anthony Weiner, and Bill Clinton should play Bert, the chimney sweep.

The story wouldn't work if the drunk, dummy, selfish, workaholic dad didn't keylog his daughter's pc.

    All the above makes sense

The Bert character then needs to be a cockney wideboy of dubious honesty who tries to manupulate the kids into climbing chimneys for "treasure" etc...

Dick van Dykes accent MUST be preserved however.

Mary Poppins is perfect the way it is. It a shame that someday they will do a remake, and it will be awful.

Yes and such an unrealistic portrayal of penguins cannot be tolerated. That is, if I get far enough to decide whether or not I should tolerate it.

Cast someone with a REAL British accent as Bert.

Julie Andrews as Mary Poppins was the inspiration for some of my first pre-pubescent erections. I remember them well and quite fondly.

Well mary poppins won't be shoveling a spoonful of sugar to let the medicine go down. Chances are the parents would freak out and call the police and call it child abuse.

I don't think we need to go as far as to have Mr Banks be a wife beater or an alcoholic, he can be a workaholic who appears not to care much. I've always seen Mr Banks as being a lot like Captain Von Trapp in THe Sound of Music, he comes across as a horrible guy but he's really not once you crack the tough outer shell.

Although Hook is not as great a movie as it could have been, the negligence of Robin Williams' character due to his work is I think the way Mr Banks is meant to be. A similar more modern roles could be assigned to him were the story to be updated.

Content would most likely largely be down to whether Disney would still make the movie.

DVD is fun in the role, but someone with a better grasp of cockney accent and better acting ability would be better for Bert. Van Dyke was in it because he could sing and dance very well, which is needed in a musical.

They really ought to just change the timeframe so we don't know that Michael is totally going to die a pointless death in the trenches in 4 to 8 years.

It helps to imagine that film - along with the movie 'Frighteners' - takes place in the Harry Potter universe.

"All we could find was an 'Mary Poppins' outtake with Julie Andrews saying the "s"-word."

    "That's a stag film?!"

"Hey, think about it! I get goose bumps!"

Can't we just cast British actors do do British parts?

Plenty of talented actors here who could do the roles in updated versions of the story.

    I'm all for that.
Big name characters from a particular country like Lincoln or Churchill should I think be played by someone from that country.

Why have an American play Beatrix Potter? We have english actresses who could do it well enough (and one that doesn't look like a Hamster the way Zellweger does)

I'm not against foreign actors playing foreign roles if they're good enough, but I've seen too many examples in Hollywood especially where the actor was put in for ratings and not for ability to do the part. If you can't do the accent, either don't try or get someone who can.
Natalie Portman did two mvoies where she had to do an English accent, she failed both times at doing it. Either she shouldn't have bothered at all, or someone english should've been cast in the role.

I remember Sir Alec Guinness playing an Indian character in a movie, that was embarassing. Not only did he look stupid with darkened skin and no attempt at the accent, he didn't even research the role enough to do the correct behaviour for the type of character he was playing. It was weird seeing such a great actor ham it up so badly in a movie.
