I just installed the original xwing game on my computer and I'm running it with dos box. I have a question about the kalidor cresent. I seem to remember that it was made of several different parts. I was awarded the medal after the 3rd misson on Tour 1. Does anyone know what the requirements are for the different pieces? Is there a certain number of Ties or other ships you must destroy to rate a new piece for the medal?

As far I remember - just as in X-Wing: Alliance - I believe all parts were gained as you went through the campaign, with no special mission requirements. Of course, I could be wrong here...

IIRC it's by hitting certain scores in missions.

The Kalidor Crescent itself could actually be earned in the very first Tour of Duty mission: head for the FRT furthest from you and destroy it (your wingman is useful for destroying the mission-critical FRTs here). This will bring on the FRG Gorgon...strip it of its fighter cover, then destroy it, and the medal is yours (it's tougher than it looks, which is why it was a requirement for joining Rogue Squadron on CompuServe's FSCOMBAT forum all those years ago).

Mr Stele is correct. It's dependent on getting high scores.
    Kalidor Crescent: 10,000
    Bronze Cluster: 12,000
    Silver Talons: 14,000
    Silver Scimitar: 16,000
    Golden Wings: 18,000
    Diamond Eyes: 20,000
You have to get them in order, for example 20K first off will only get you the Crescent.

Cool. Thanks for all of the replies. I used to play xwing on my old 486dx back when everyone was drooling over windows 95. I will have to start a tour over and try to get the cresent on the first mission. Right now I am on mission 8 of tour 1 and I have the cresent and the bronze cluster.

I also found a copy of tie fighter cd collectors edition on ebay for 8 bucks in the original box. Once I finish up with up with xwing I will get cracking with Tie Fighter. Thanks for all of the help.

Thanks Wildstar, I started a new pilot and I won the cresent after taking your advice. I was not able to knock out the frigate though. However, I have the cresent and the bronze cluster and I am going for the next piece. I am on the 4th mission on the first tour and I have 2 little dots on my shoulder. I cant remember exactly what rank that is. But thanks for the advice.

In my TacOp comment on the mission on the CRS Morning Star site, I suggested saving your torpedoes for the FRG. It does take some time to kill the cap ship, but remember, there's no time limit in a ToD mission. Best way to deal w/ the FRG after wasting your torps on it is to charge up your lasers and shields at a safe distance, fire them at the FRG as you approach and when you're within range (jinking as you're fired upon), then head away from the FRG at about .75 klicks and jink/weave as you retreat, shunting laser energy to your shields as needed, and repeating the process. Remember, this FRG is going top speed, has Top Ace gunners, and is targeting you specifically, so be careful. :)

I also have x-wing and was wondering if there is a way to see what your mission objectives are in flight. Like in TIE Fighter, I sometimes forget what some of the bonus objectives are and want to see what they are without starting over.

I have only found the specific mission objectives for xwing in the offical strategy guide. You can however hit the "B" key and it will bring you to the inflight briefing you recieved before you started the mission. But as far as individual objectives, I think you just have to go along with the mission briefing as best you can. Hope this helps.

That is definately on of the many advantages to tie fighter over xwing. I also really like the abillity to use the 640x480 resolution for the game as well as the advanced missles and torpedos. I think xwing would be 10 fold better than it is if it would have incorporated those things in it. IMO...

Well, since TIE Fighter came out a year after X-Wing, it makes sense that it has more advanced features...
