If you’re going to defend the film, maybe try and address the other points raised, and don’t resort to ‘that’s your opinion,’ or that you understand why ‘cultists’ didn’t like it or how ‘the critics liked it.’ Explain why it worked for you. Watto explained why he didn’t like it, because it wasn’t different enough, and your response was that you understand why he didn’t like it because is was too different. Are you even reading what other people are saying?

Fassbender is so good in Prometheus, Scott made him the hero of the next movie. And the bad guy. technically, both

Prometheus is the answer to the question posed by Attack of the Clones, namely: how much worse can a sci fi prequel actually get?

    Keep the OPINIONS coming.

I actually wish I could go in someone else's body and see what it is that they see. She ran in a straight line --> bad movie!

That giant alien is a Jesus character -->bad movie!

Why are there no Xenomorphs if it's an Alien movie? -->bad movie!

My cousin Eric petted a space cobra once. I don’t see the bid deal.

Though it doesn't make it that much better, there is a deleted scene set prior to the cobra that shows his tendency to just touch things before he knows what they are. Which maybe explains his initial behavior. But that doesn't excuse him not becoming cautious once the thing opens up its hood and hisses like a cobra.

Isn't that more Covenant (well, more than just "more", the last act of that film is blatantly remaking Alien in 60 seconds)? Prometheus really doesn't have the alien in it- you have the two smaller lifeforms (like predecessors to the facehugger but not exactly), plus the Deacon (which is much closer to the xeno- yet even that was an after thought for a stinger, not really a part of the story) and the infected Fifeld. The rest was focused on the Engineer and David.

They were picked off one by one (unrealistically, as described above), and then to really drive home the point that this movie is not what you were promised, you got the alien. What more do you want me to say? It was bad.

Ah, ok. It sounded like you were linking the two, which is where my confusion was. Scott definitely gave into pressures/complaints (from suits and/or audiences) about not including the xenomorph in Prometheus. Thus the bonus scene with the Deacon being added in after the fact, and then basically fully giving in with Covenant in what was essentially a "Here. This is what you said you wanted last time that you didn't get and so I'm going to give you the beast and a lot of it this time so we make enough money that I can finish telling the story I really want to tell next time" concession. And, obviously, that didn't pay off (since the 3rd movie was never made) and is another good example of why creators shouldn't necessarily listen to audiences about what they want.

It was entertaining. Far more entertaining than any movie from the franchise since Aliens.

But it didn't have as much of the pew pew pew scenes as the others did and people have a problem with that.

I loved the concept behind Prometheus. Exploring the space jockey, adding some ancient alien angle... it's all fine by me. But, despite involving the creator of the franchise and a couple of solid actors, the end result is mediocre. The comparisons to the Star Wars prequels are perfectly spot-on.

Covenant was so much worse, though. Imagine the pitch session:

"Okay so, for our sequel, let's get some inspiration from Aliens!"
'Oh, so a genre shift, an upping of the sca--"
"No. What's what everyone loves about Aliens?"
    "Hmmm Cameron's direction?"
"No, the fact that Hicks and Newt were killed offscreen between it and Alien 3."
    "..."
"I know you'd agree. So we are going with that."
"Did-- did Noomi refuse to work with us or...?"
"Oh no! She's in! Just not in the movie. We are going to do one of those... webisodes or whatever... with her. To show how she died."
    "Our main character..."
"Yeah, she's dead. We'll include it as a DVD extra."
"So... what's the new movie about...?"
'Oh, we are remaking Prometheus, but with more Alien. In fact, we'll call it Alien: Whatever. I'm waiting to hear from marketing on an appropriately Biblical buzzword."
    "..."
"Oh. And multiple Fassbenders! We can't fail!"

(Choose which of these interlocutors was Ridley Scott, I'm not getting there.)

yeah, just not anyone you're talking to.

anyway, i can't really relitigate the movie because i honestly barely remember it. i just know it's the movie that made me finally stop caring about this franchise. i never saw covenant, i didn't even realize they never made the third film. it's just not on my radar at all anymore.

The movie that made me stop caring about the franchise was A3; until I saw that Noomi Rapace was in Prometheus and then it all of a sudden got on my radar.

Prometheus is still my favorite of the franchise. Best performances, best visual effects (looked great in 3D), most interesting story, and the “abortion” scene is maybe the must excruciating of the franchise. Maybe not as atmospheric and nasty as previous entries, but more satisfying imo.

But it’s not a perfect film, and it’s tonally inconsistent, almost scattershot. The stories and themes aren’t fully developed, it needed a sequel it never got. And I get why people were disappointed when they’d expected an Alien with . . . no alien

    Not a fan of Covenant

yeah, 3 was bad enough that i never bothered with resurrection. but i was excited for prometheus too, with ridley returning to the franchise, just disappointed in what it ended up being.

Resurrection is the most 1997 movie. I respect that.
