That was partially why my recent "rewatch" of season 1 was really reading plot summaries to refresh myself on the details of each episode, and then actually rewatching the finale episode. Eight episodes is not a lot, but it drags at times... and I wanted to just do it in one sitting, basically.

Like the Star Wars prequels, maybe the best version of this show will just be a 3-4 minute clip reel that implies much better-executed plots than the writers and actors ever achieved.

So besides Amazon's ROP series, the other upcoming on-screen thing for LOTR is the War of the Rohirrim animated movie. I know it was mentioned in here before, but I don't think this latest update got discussed.

I guess this series got just enough ROP[e] to hang itself.

Can't find it now. It was a picture of the fellowship standing in front of a classic blue police call box.

As I just mentioned in the "books" thread, I finally just finished reading LOTR for the first time. I also skimmed through the appendices, but didn't read them all in full detail. After having seen the movies so many times, it was interesting to see the source directly and to see the choices made or parts focused on for the movies. Honestly, the books are obviously very good, but are a pretty long and drawn out read; in retrospect they make even the EE movies feel pretty tight in comparison. Obviously movies based on novels almost always feel that way, but it's still kind of noteworthy here because those are long movies.

I felt that way with the long detours in the first half of FotR that were almost entirely cut from the films. Once Tolkien figures out where he's going, though, I felt the pace picked up a lot.

“Fun” fact, Fellowship of the Ring is so abnormal compared to the rest of the book that it has spawned two incompatible groupings of Lord of the Rings narrative analysis entirely based around trying to explain it. Tom Shippey favors the “whoops, I accidentally reset the plot five times” theory and the other camp thinks it is actually a big brain genius plotting decision to lull people into a false sense of security. It’s fascinating, and by it’s fascinating I mean it isn’t but by god you can read a whole lot of arguments about it.
