Just a question: why does Luke make the kids at his academy wear orange jumpsuits? It's been bugging me when I read the JJK and YJK books. The covers: orange jumpsuits. Does he want them to look like inmates of something or is that his style?

    (btw, I don't have anything against orange ;) )

Luke remembered that his greatest triumph during his first days of learning the Force came when he "trusted his feelings," turned off his targetting computer and blew up Death Star I.

He was, of course, wearing his bright orange X-Wing flight suit at the time... ;)

It's actually one of the few things concerning the safety of his students that I would actually consider thoughtful and responsible, considering everything else (training impressionable kids on the old stomping grounds of the Sith, etc.)

Consider the environment... a jungle moon with stone temples. Not a whole lot of orange there. If you need to find a student, they are easier to spot. If someone is out in the jungle and sees a flash of orange, they are more likely to stop because it's a student than shoot first and ask questions later. It's like the safety outfits worn by people who go out near the woods in hunting season, or crossing guards wear, and so forth: distinct, not a common color in the environment, bright, etc, etc.

Something tells me thats not the answers...

LUKE: "okay, kids. You can go outside now and play with your lightsabers and levitate large objects and play around in all the temples imbued with dark energy and the carnivorous animals and the odd imperial and other nasties... but make sure you wear your bright orange jumpsuits so that if you walk a little too far away from uncle lukie I can find you."

    ?[face_plain]

    :D

And the notion that its so they don't accidentally attack one another in the forest- they're jedi in training. I think they'd all at least be able to sense the presence of another force user nearby.

It's to help any non Force-users find the students.

Well at least they don't wear anything that clashes with the orange...I wonder what J and J thought about the orange? - My parents used to make me wear these horrible dungarees, (well they weren't orange) and i've resented them for it ever since. I wonder if the the Jaina/Leia problem came from this seemingly insignificant moment?
    :)

Just my little read into the 'situation'....
    :D

No, you have it all wrong here. The Government subsidizes the Acadamy and this is just another example of a contractor taking advantage of the NR by pawning off shoddy merchandise on to the Jedi. ;) :)

You see, the flightsuits are that offensive orange colour because it's the cheapest stuff availible.

Yeah, it always seemed like cheap military surplus to me. Heck, the academy is on an old starfighter base, there were probably a crate or two of the things laying around.
