Ultra-coincidence, or on purpose. The Anti-Christ [Beast] and his apprentice [The False Prophet] in the Biblical Books of Revelation and Daniel use the three numbers 666 to mark humans who are allied with them, and to eliminate their opponents, the good Christians.

Palpatine and his then apprentice [Dooku] used a very similar number -- 66 --, to turn the troopers against the only good forces left -- the Jedi.

Is George trying to say something?

Why not Article 67, or 68, or 65?

66 is most likely a take off of 666. He took out the extra 6 because it was too obvious.

Well, Palps is as close to the AntiChrist as Star Wars is gonna get. But, just as Anakin was not intended to be a direct Jesus parallel despite his virgin birth, Sidious isn't the AntiChrist.

Just another way George reinforces the idea that the Sith = Bad Guys. Since Star Wars is a mythology, it only makes sense to use imagery that people are familiar with. There is nothing good about the Sith, no matter what Palps says. :)

I think it's more likely a reference to "Order 9066," which was to place Japanese-Americans in internment camps during World War II. It's more in line with GL's apparent dislike of government in general.

Dooku was long dead when Order 66 was given.

I'd say it's not necessarily a dislike of government, but a dislike of governments that abuse their power.

Completely unnecessary explanation of the evil #6

The number six's shape determines its unholiness(?) Look at the number as if you were writing it. We'd start at the top, which symbolically is heaven. The number then takes the path downward towards earth, it then tries to travel back up to heaven, but cannot and falls back down to earth. Never to return to the heavens.

    Numerology...... a result of boredom

God doesn't exist. Chauncy beat him in rock scissors paper, and God shot himself then Chauncy ate him with some hot sauce. I saw it myself on Wonder Showzen. SO if God doesn't exist neither does the devil, just Lord Kromdor.
MTV and Wonder Showzen would not lie to me.
So Order 66 has nothing to do with the Bible.

I beleive Lucas was raised a methodist and I don't think he currently practices any actual religion.

For Star Wars though he has borrowed from several major religons including Christianity and Buddhism to come up with the Force and the Jedi Order. That way it transends all societies.

Order 66 is probably a play off both 666 of the Bible. The Route 66 bit is interesting seeing he is a car buff, however; Lucas's car days were normally run from Modesto to Merced, CA. There it is route 99 that's the big highway (watch American Graffiti).

Besides the fact that Order 66 is pretty catchy and rolls of the tongue much better than 56, 11, or 97; I'm not sure that there is much here to determine for sure what it means short of dropping the big guy and email an asking him.

Remember, Lucas has a penchant for catchy sounding number/letter combos: THX 1138, C3PO and R2. (R2D2 came from an editing session where he was asked to hand over reel R-2, d-20)...

The obvious definition, however, if you really really want one would be Route 66...having had a gander at American Graffiti should put aside any inkling that order 66 means the devil.
