I have no doubt this has already been discussed at some point but I thought it would be interesting to provide a link to some Star Wars original concept art, for anyone that hasn't seen it: http://abduzeedo.com/star-wars-concept-art-ralph-mcquarrie
I love the art behind the scenes of film, especially with SW. Could you add a little, perhaps a favorite or something? (I like the Had Abbaddon stuff McQuarrie did for ROTJ.)
Just to avoid possible confusion, I'd like to point out that Ralph McQauarrie's depiction of Alderaan's capital (first image in the link of the OP) was not done for ANH but in 1995 for the book The Illustrated Star Wars Universe.
Ralph McQuarrie was a genius. Lucas is the Maker, but we owe to McQuarrie a lot of pretty SW visuals. If I ever get to live in a house, my plan is to fill one wall with concept printouts.
Ralph McQurrie is my favorite movie artist. The guy just makes such creative worlds, creatures and vehicles. I'm grateful that star wars is still being influenced by him.
I can imagine Lucas being miffed that he had to share McQurrie with Battlestar Galactica. I guess McQurrie came up with the designs for Vipers and Cylon fighters as well - all good stuff!
Thank-you for sharing! There are a few illustrations I've not seen. He was such an amazing visionary.
