Original Star Wars Trading Cards Question

Can anyone tell me how many trading cards were released in the original set of cards prior to Empire way back when I was a kid? I remember having a paper grocery bag filled with lots and lots of cards, some red, some yellow, and some of colors that I don't remember. I also remember that there was a puzzle on the back of the cards. So far I have only learned that there were a "few" sets issued with different colors at different times, and that there are at least 100 cards in the entire collection prior to the release of Empire. Any help here would be great. Thanks.

 

Padawan - this info is from 'A Universe of Star Wars Collectables' by Stuart W. Wells III. I am assuming you mean the original Topps cards released in 1977.
Series 1 - blue border with stars: 66 cards/11 stickers
Series 2 - red border - 66 cards/11 stickers
series 3 - yellow border - 66 cards/11 stickers
Series 4 - green border - 66 cards/11 stickers
Series 5 - brown/orange - 66 cards/11 stickers
