I know it applies to both Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones and soon to be Revenge of the Sith too, but I'm not gonna post it in all three forums, so I just picked one. I know Lucas this time around wanted to really show off the elegantness you could say of the times of the prequal trilogy, which also corresponds with the designs of the ships and of course characters clothing, but I dunno. As much as I think Padme's outfits are very nice looking and well made, there's times in both phantom meance and attack of the clones, where she doesn't need to wear a different piece of clothing in every damn scene. It is fine to wear to wear the same dress for longer than a period of one scene. Like the scene in TPM where Amidala is staring out the window when the federation is invading theed and shes wearing her red dress looking all sad. then the next time u see her, shes coming down the stairs, wearing a totally new dress, all black and white makeup and black lipstick and such, and u think to urself the logic. Did she really think to herself, Oh before the evil federation takes me away, I think I better put on a better dress and redo my makeup, etc. Then you have the way Amidala looks on her way back to Naboo at the end, then when she goes to see the Gungans, shes looking different now. It's just alot of her wardrobe changes are quite unnecessary no matter how nice they may look. I know it's probably true, but most of the time, it just feels like Lucas is just trying to show off his costume designers skills. Seemed more realistic you could say, back in the OT when Leia wore that white dress throughout the whole first film, and her snow suit throughout the second film, etc.

It's also part of the genres Lucas is paying homage to. This is something that was done in the old Republic serials and so on.

The "Queen" walking down the stairs after the invasion is not Padme, it is Sabe. That was the reason for the change.

Besides, she's a queen from olden days. They did change clothes alot. I'm guessing she just kept the habit during AOTC.

Every outfit shows the color imagery of the scene.

Red Throne Room - red symbolizes regality
Black Feather - capture and downer
White Palpatine Office- symbolizes pure innocence next to pure evil
Red Senate - symbolizes regality once again in front of the highest order
Black Shell Post Senate - she didn't get what she wanted to a degree, situation is getting worse
Purple Return Home - pure serenity
Black Shell Theed - end of battle, mourning to degree.
    Purple Funeral - mourning
    White celebration - new beginning
