In Isaac Asimov's novel "Foundation", there are several paralells to Star Wars.

1: The Galaxy is ruled by an Empire (instead of Republic) which is stagnating.

    2. The captial of the Empire is a city-planet akin to Coruscant called Trantor.

    3. There is a confederation of worlds, which, while part of the Empire, fiercely maintains its independence; it is caleed the Korellian Republic. I really don't think I have to explain this one.

    Discuss, please.

Apart from the Correlia/Korrelia connection, most of that stuff is just standard Sci fi stuff. But we all know where GL gets his inspiration don't we?

Yeah, most of that is just standard sci-fi stuff now, but back in the thirties when Foundation was written, it wasn't. Wasn't Foundation where the word 'hyperdrive' was invented, too?

I think that Korell was part of the Empire, but broke away early in its fall. After all, in the Foundation universe the entire Galaxy was part of the Empire until it began falling.

There are some other connections I cna make, too:

    Hober Mallow = Han Solo
    Force penknives = lightsabers
    Second Foundation = Jedi Order
    The Mule = Palpatine
    Gaia/Galaxia = Killiks

And in Foundation too, it is stated that one of the reasons the Empire existed was to protect against possible extra-galactic invaders.

Hmm well maybe this was the Foundation;)(Sorry, I just couldn't resist) for GL's original vision of Star Wars!

Trantor is very like Coruscant. Now who does Daneel represent? For a Robot he's almost a Yoda.

    He's obviously Mr. Guri.

In a way, he too could be like Palpatine - very patiently manipulating the galaxy to set his plot in motion.

Except that Daneel's motives were (apparently) noble whereas Palpatine's were not.
God, Foundation and Earth was awful...

I read Foundation, but couldn't finish Foundation and Empire even after The Mule, who turned out to be a big disappointment, was introduced. I can't read books that jump around a few generations indiscriminately before I can even start to appreciate the characters.

I liked Foundation and Earth better than Foundation's Edge or the prequels.

Yeah...pulp fiction movies, samurai films and westerns, plus some mythological elements. ;)
