I'm always trying to save money so I canceled my AOL account and switched to People PC Online. The dial up was too slow on AOL, and AOL broadband is too pricey for me at this time. Well, I'm only saving 8 bucks a month but I think it's worth it for something that's faster than what I had. Though the lady over the phone tried to talk me out of it, saying my computer will get hacked now that I don't have AOL protection. What internet provider do you guys have, and what do you think of the many internet providers out there today (such as PeoplePC Online, Net Zero, or AOL). I used to have AOL until tonight, so I guess I'll find out what life without AOL is like....

You know what, F AOL. I used them for years and they suck hairy goat balls.

It's not even the service I minded. It's the fact that their whole system has a TOS and you have to abide by their rules.

    F them.

If you have a half-decent firewall and you exercise some common sense, you'll be protected against most hacking attempts no matter what ISP you use. That AOL person was just trying to save a sale.

    What Hawk said.

AOL 'protection' is no different to software you can download for free, and have better control over. If you want to splash out then buy Norton Internet Security, as it's the badger's nadgers.

Sale's reps on the phone will say anything to keep you from ending your contract with them to the point of outright lying to you.

That's kind of what I thinking too. I had AOL for 3 years. Anyhow, I have norton anti-virus protection. Do you guys happen to know about those free security downloads for poor people like me? :) I'll look into norton internet security. Thanks for the responses!

for spyware - adaware and spybot (install teatimer to prevent unwanted registry changes)
for firewall - zonealarm is still one of the best
for antivirus - not 100% sure - goto rocketdownload or download.com and search
for surfing - download and install firefox - blocks popups and malicious scripts.
