    Pitbull Holocaust in Denver:
As of last Monday, May 9th, all pit bulls in Denver are subject to confiscation and immediate euthanasia. Animal control is performing house to house sweeps and removing them from their families. Pit bull owners who are unable to get their dogs out of the area are being forced to surrender them or face fines and jail time.
How is this kind of thing legal?

If it were alligators they were talking about, you would not be asking that question.

    http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/4467849/detail.html

if they have been illegal for ages and have tons of illegally owned dogs, it's only be a year... these people shouldn't be THAT shocked. THose things are scary beyond belief, and very dangerous.

Gee, I love how people jump to banning things in the name of public safety. [face_plain]

And BTW, Pitbulls are not dangerous unless they are trained to be dangerous. I had a friend who owned one (named it "Bruiser" of all things). Only time I got "attacked" by it was when it bit me once while I was playing with it. But that doesn't really count as dogs generally do that.

EDIT--Come to think of it, Dalmatians are actually worse biters than pitbulls.

But they're cuter, so nobody cares.

There're a lot of illegal ones, so we're going to penalize the good owners as well? That makes sense.

More people are killed and maimed by cars and guns than by pitbulls, yet those things remain legal. . .

I'm not saying it's 100% right, I'm just presenting what looked like In my view to be a more reasonable representation of the issue.

Cars aren't prone to suddenly snap and attack their owners, little children, and anything nearby.

Yes people should be responsible, but most people don't get this breed of dog because they are cuddly and cute. They get them for 'defense' purposes.
Since the dogs are likely to snap and attack for no reason, even a 'safe' dog can't be considered safe.
Yes, inbred dalmations are almost as bad.

It's the difference between owning a shotgun and buying a machine gun.
A shotgun has other purposes other than killing people. A machine gun can't be justified any other way.

This just seems plain weird to me, I've never heard of a dog being banned in the UK and wiped out [face_sick] Maybe it has happened in the past though and I'm just not aware of it. Personally I think a dog should only be put down if it has hurt someone, not because it might do.

If pitbulls weren't dangerous to the general public this wouldn't happen.

Yes, they only do those things when their owners are incompetent or malicious! Let's outlaw and euthanize all people!

I think it's wrong to just go get every pitbull in existence and assume their the devil. There should be at least some kind of obedience test before he is considered a killer and taken away from his owners.

BUT, has anyone here actually seen one of these things in "attack mode"? They are extremely viscious creatures that will not stop. Theirs something in their brain that keeps them from quitting the fight like most other dogs. They will continue to attack until their enemy is dead in many cases. I've seen one of these dogs running after a guy, and when the dog got close enough, the guy cracked the pitbull's head with a baseball bat in mid-run. Any other dog would have run off or simply quit. The pit doesn't do that. He'll find another way to sink his teeth into your face, so after the dog shook it off he was at it again. After a couple minutes, I had jumped in with a bat of my own, to help him out. We had to wait 20 minutes before animal control showed up to get the dog. I honestly don't think he would have stopped otherwise.

So, Petey from the the Little Rascals is a vicious killer, and couldn't be trusted around kids?

This is unconstituntional, at best, and definitly unethical.

    edit:
For God's sake, seeing some of these answers, it's no wonder America is in the crapper. People are giving up their freedoms without questioning authority!
What's next? You going to give up your guns? What about kitchen knives? How about baseball bats, and hockey sticks?

This is a slippery slope, and until people start standing up to our own government, we will continue to have our freedoms eroded until we're drinking Victory Gin with Winston.

Owners should be able to keep them, but they must be kept fenced in (if kept outside for any period of time) or on a leash when outside of the home. Some pitbulls are wonderful dogs, but in all the accounts we hear of dog attacks, the owner always says, "He's never done anything like this before."

Enjoy your pets in your home. If you take a potentially dangerous animal into a public environment (and I mean Dalmations and other breeds that are known for being...dangerously rambunctious), it's up to you to control it. It's like some parents who think their children can do no wrong- everyone else sees how dangerous these dogs can be, but some owners just refuse to believe.

There have been so many attacks in Denver in the recent year that I could have seen this coming from a long time ago. I live about 45 minutes to the south of Denver, and it's sad, but pitbulls have a bad name thanks to stupid owners who don't use leashes or let their dogs out unsupervised.

The saddest thing, though is when the dog snaps at a child that they live with and kills them...happened several times last year in Denver alone.

I wonder if it has something to do with the altitude? Seriously, maybe their stupid little brains need more oxygen in order to function properly?

When their dogs are taken, they should get a voucher to go to the pound and pick up a new rat terrier:

People say that all the time. Whenever a person kills someone, his friends and neighbours always say, "You'd never think he could do something like that. He was always so friendly and helpful and quiet and yadayada. . ."

Pit bulls are illegal in many states, not just because of their nature. It's also because people run illegal dog fights with pit bulls that are cruel and viscious.

The ASPCA makes it a procedure to euthenize all pitbulls that are owned in states that outlaw them.

If people weren't stupid then it wouldn't be a problem, but seeing as how they are, I can see how it's necessary to have such laws.

Agreed. It's also why every commercial involving something unsafe has to have "Do not attempt" at the bottom of the screen, and products have to have stupid warning labels.

We have too many mullings from pitbulls here in Denver. It's the owners fault and personally i think both should be put down.

I think it's even more ridiculous that they'll confiscate any dog that even resembles a pit bull. If I lived in Denver they could take my boxer and my grandmother's mutt because they both resemble a pit bull, even thought it may be a slight resemblance.
