I'm writing a fan fict and i'm just wondering if impenetrable plantary shields are possible. Like completely impenetrable so no laser blasts or ships could get through. Is it possible? When?
From my point of view, there is only so far a planetary shield can go. There is no shield that can repulse a superlaser beam, for example, and the power requirements of an inpenetrable shield would make it very, very impractical - as well as impossible. Each laser hit or particle collision would chip away at power until eventually the shield is gone. I hope that helps. I_F
I know the Empire had a planetary shield able to withstand days of bombardment from a fleet of star destroyers. And star destroyers have turbolasers. Only the death stars, the Emperors special star destroyer and darksaber had superlasers.
Ordinary Imperial-class Star Destroyers don't have superlasers. However, the enormous Eclipse-class Star Destroyers did, although they were scaled-back models. Check out the CUSWE for more info. I_F
Here is a nice link that discussed the axial superlaser in the Eclipse and Soveriegn class ships, here I copied the paragraph that discussed the superlaser, here it is, * The Planet-Destroying Superlaser on the Sovereign and Eclipse Star Destroyers is not capable of completely destroying planets. The Death Star's superlaser consisted of eight large superlasers which, when focused into a single beam, was able to destroy planets. The Eclipse and Sovereign have only one of these eight lasers; though, thanks to recent breakthroughs in laser technology, this single laser has two-thirds the power of the Death Star's complete laser. The superlaser are capable of bringing down even the strongest planetary shields, and can level whole continents and sear the planet's surface, but cannot destroy the planet. I hope that helps.
Even two thirds of the power of the Death Star's superlaser would be enough to break the planet apart. These people don't know physics.
there was one Star Destroyer that had a Super Laser, that was the Errant Venture no one knows about it though (So don't tell)
