He placed bets that his team would win. Why is that such a big deal?

Gambling is not illegal by any means, so why has be been banned from the sport? If MLB is trying to play the 'shame on you' angle, its really quite pathetic as they can't even crack down on steriod use.

Why is it so bad that Martha Stewart "gambled" investments in her own companies?

Betting on your team is still crossing the line as a manager.

Wow. Never thought I would say this, but: I agree with you Lee. He should without a doubt be inducted into the Hall Of Fame.

Money influences results. A manager of a baseball team was influenced to produce certain results through money.

Let's not forget that he denied it for decades.

If that were true, the New Orleans Saints would have been Superbowl champs back when they hired Ditka.

"Season on the Brink" will always be my favorite.

I guess you don't understand sports, Lee. You cannot ever bet on your own sport as a member of a team, and gambling in general is frowned on by most major sports leagues (at least in this country). One conspiracy theory is that Michael Jordan was forced into a temporary retirement by David Stern, due to his heavy gambling losses through 1993 (including some in the NBA Finals of 1993). Jordan said in his retirement press conference that he would be back "if they'll let me", or something close to that.

At any rate, gambling is extremely damaging to the integrity of the game, and brings the influence of money into potentially affecting the results of a given match or game. It cannot ever be allowed. Ever.

I believe there's a sign in every MLB clubhouse to that effect.

Exactly. This is why all the banned players from the 1908 Black Sox scandal will never have their lifetime ban lifted, and thus, ever be eligible to enter the HOF.

    Good points KnightWriter.

Plus he could have injured someone such as a pitcher when he leaves them into long because he wants to win to cover his bets.

He must have gotten his Chicago teams confused. 1908 was the last time the Cubs won (they're approaching the 100th anniversary!)

I should think that either all of it is okay or none of it is okay.

Since when do jockeys, breeders and owners gamble on horse racing?

 I was originally thinking 1918, but then I thought "No, that's the last year the Red Sox won the World Series until '04.

    My recall FTL.

I don't know what was bad about it when every school and business bets on the basketball playoffs every year.

People unaffiliated with the team (definitely) or sport (ideally) will bet on games. You will never, or should never, see a member of a given team or someone in a position of authority in an organization or school betting on games.

Sports history is in this country is rife with gambling scandals, and a big one happened just down the road from me here at Arizona State.

If he were point shaving, that'd be one thing. He wasn't, though, theoretically.

The Black Sox should be banned, except for Shoeless Joe Jackson. How can a guy hit over .400 and have no errors in the series yet be accused of point shaving?

    Kinda pointless.
